3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Nickls (1297) - SE DC, Washington DC, USA - APR 27, 2010
(Old BA rate - bottle)
Nice amber/orange color in line with a lot of other DIPAs that I have sampled. Piney, cedary strong hop character in the aroma, with not even a hint malt. Sets you up for what you will be tasting. Strong hoppy, west coast style taste that really hits the spot. Malty texture to let the hops kick in big, but keep the mouthfeel smooth and coating. Certainly a strong beer on hops, but a very drinkable DIPA. Very great on the drinkability scale given the sometimes overwhelming nature of other beers in this style. Really good DIPA, and one that I will certainly return to.

A- Body is a completely transparent orange/amber that pours with a 1 finger off-white foamy head. Head fades pretty quickly to a thin collar and little lacing is left behind in the glass.
S-Sweet caramel malt is the first thing to come through. The hops are present-but very subtle and cirtusy. The balance is definitely tipped toward the malty side (more of an amber ale caramel malt than a barleywine malt).
T-Upfront is a citrusy hop flavor and a big caramel malt backbone. Some earthy hop flavors and a faint touch of pine come through for the finish. A minimal residual bitterness lingers with along with even fainter hints of caramel malt. The slightest bit of alcohol heat lingers also.
P- Low carbonation and medium weight body that is smooth and somewhat oily. The alcohol can be detected here more than in the taste (which is still present but minimal and unobtrusive).
O-This is a nice DIPA that has a surprisingly mild character (especially with a name like MAXIMUS). This would be a nice intro DIPA...if there is such a thing. I like this one and will have it again.

12oz bottle scored via trade. Pours a totally transparent, copper, orange amber with a lacing, slightly creamy, slightly off white head. Unique aroma, oranges, lemons, cantaloupe, biscuit dough. Flavor is fruity, oranges, lemons, melons, caramel, crackers. Full bodied, dry finish. A different take on a double IPA.

The beer pours a nice color, bright, dark amber with good highlights. It’s a good looking beer with a good head. It smells of some good hops, but it’s a little underwhelming as a DIPA. The hops are enjoyably bitter with citrus and pine flavors. There’s some balancing malt, but it’s just not strong enough.

Too Piney for my taste.... Copper colored with a minimal head, mildly malty aroma, not pungently hoppy in the American IPA vein... Medium to medium full bodied, somewhat lively...
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 tennessejed420 (838) - Denver, Colorado, USA - APR 7, 2010
12 oz. bottle. Pours an amber tinted gold with even off-white froth layer. Sweet hoppy aroma, very resiny and floral, notes of sour diesel, pine. Flavor is pretty much an explosion of hops in the mouth, much more citrus / grapefruit noticeable, but still retaining the sweet resiny aspect, with the citrus coming out more on the finish. Full bodied but not syrupy, however somewhat sour profile, very bitter. If you love hops you will love this beer, and regardless it’s a pretty nice mention.

Bottle. Pours a bright orangish-yellow with a white head. Nice little islands. Strong pine scent with some citrus. Taste is similar - pine, grepefruit, hoppy. Not too extremely bitter, really meshes well with the semi-sweetness in the background. Good beer.
