This is not the original Pale Ale as brewed in far away 1993 in the back of the Old House of Richards Building in West Marin hamlet of Forest Knolls right next to little Lagunitas. It is way better. Back then the beer tasted like broccoli and kerosene and the carbonation ate right through and drained your stomach into your gut...

Reviewed 3/7/13. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a clear golden color. The head is a one finger white shade not too out of the ordinary for the style - lowish retention, nice creaminess, good bit of lacing on the glass. S: It smells like a Lagunitas beer: grapefruity and herbal Simcoe hops abound. No, not nearly as much as Sucks, but still enough to wake the nostrils up. There’s also a lemony component here, too. As it sits in the glass, it actually becomes reasonably malty, with biscuit and bread notes. T: An initial salvo of grapefruit, lemongrass, pine, and sourdough bread counterbalancing suggest this one’s actually full of Centennial. Maltiness surges upwards on the finish, with a faint lemon zest bitterness to it. This one is all about balance without any craziness - too often, I find a lot of Centennial-hopped beers to be somewhat harsh (Founders Centennial IPA being a good example), but this one is really pleasant. M: Crisp and light, which is a feature I always love in pale ales. A mild syrupy linger accumulates after many sips; luckily it doesn’t weigh down the palate excessively. Carbonation is about what I expect. O: Lost in Sucksamania is this rock-solid pale ale. Yes, it tastes like many other hoppy offerings from Lagunitas - but when they’re all really good-to-fantastic, who cares? A great ’lunch’ beer.

From tap at Fermentoren Aarhus. Pours a clear golden orange with a big, white head. Aroma has lots of fruity hops, pine, spice, citrus, peach, pale malts, mango, slight strawberry. Taste is pretty dry, but with a subtle oily sweetness. Rather bitter. High carbonation and a light to oily body.

Aroma is old. Malt, earthy hops, tropical fruit, but with no bottle date who knows. Appearance is golden, white head, clear. Taste is old, citrus, fruit, malt, cereal, I’m sure it’s old. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light carbonation, old hop aftertaste. Overall, I wish this didn’t taste so old/this beer came in fresh sometime.

355 ml bottle. Almost clear golden body with a medium sized off-white head. Strong aroma of citric hops and malt. Flavor is citric fruity hops with a fine malty base and well balanced bitterness for the style. Medium to full bodied and good, smooth aftertaste. Pretty straight forward APA, but damn well made and perfectly balanced. Easy to drink, easy to like.

Bottle. Pours a clear darkish gold, frothy white head, sticky lacing. An initial bright fruity hop aroma moves aside and reveals pine sap. Flavour has citrus, guava, pine, tangy and bitter, some earthy malt. Oily medium body, moderate bitterness, a tad sticky. Overall a decent PA, or perhaps XPA with that bitterness and ABV.
