There are two kinds. There is the DayTime kind, which is bright and welcoming and then there is the NightTime kind, which should never be confused with the DayTime. NightTime is dark and deep and may take you to unexpected places, places that the DayTime cannot. But then, the NightTime is not suited for ordinary life and ordinary tasks. In fact, NightTime may be the answer for that sort of thing, meaning that those sorts of things may never get done. Things take time in the NightTime, things slow down and you can puase (you have to, actually) and investigate carefully to find that level of objective detachment that is only possible under the spell of the NightTime. Seek the Day, but fear not the Night.

Draft at HopCat GR - pours a murky brown with tan head . Huge citrus nose . Taste is lots of juicy citrus blended with resiny pine and a hint of smoke . Outstanding brew!!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Perfectly black with a lightly yellowish khaki head. Nose of anise, toffee, and coffee. Walnuts were also present. The taste was strongly roasted coffee with some walnuts. Green beans are also present along with some umami character. A decent effort, but a little off putting the almost meaty finish. An overall decent sipper.

Black. Great, lasting, frothy beige head. Awesome fresh hoppy aroma. Pine and grapefruit. Smooth medium body. A little oily. Flavor is Loaded with hops as well. Moderate plus bitterness. No harshness. Really easy going dark malts. Definitely true to the spirit of the black IPA. Excellent.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big pillowy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is acidic roast chocolate malt with fruity piney hops and a little smoke.

The flavor is sweet roasted acidic chocolate malts with some fruity piney hops and a bit of an ashy bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, I’m liking this years version better than last year. Less sweet with more going on.

Midnight with one finger dark tan head. Strong floral hop character in the aroma. If I had my eyes closed I would think I was drinking a normal ipa. No noticeable dark malt flavors at all. The hop flavor is somewhat tangy.

12oz. bottle poured into a shaker- poured non transparent solid black color when held to a light source. 3mm off tan head formed and tried it’s best to lace upon the vessel. Aroma of resin, grapefruit, pine, and caramel that needed about 30 more seconds of cooking to break down the sugars. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, hops are very forward while the malt stays in the background, caramel and hops in the middle, finish is just somewhat acidic instead of it being an acid bomb in your mouth. Okay.

Undated 12 oz. bottle {7.9% ABV, 71 IBU, 1.075 OG} aggressively poured into an IPA glass. Very dark, very black brew - 2 finger dense nougat-like caramel-brown head. Dank cedar-grapefruit citrus-y hops hit the nose first. As it warms, toffee, earthy roasted malts become more prevalent. Heavily carbonated, foamy - silky sweet espresso with tastes of rye, hay, & oatmeal are subtle to resinous finishing hops. Roasted malt aftertaste. Outstanding Black (double?) IPA.

Best black IPA I’ve ever had, hands down. Pours black. Creamy chocolate head, super thick lacing, looks amazing. Aroma of hoppy goodness, pine, oats, dark malts, resin, beautiful dark fruit cascades. Taste of brilliant dark hops, clear and distinctive mouth feel leaves me in awe, doesn’t drink like a dark IPA, more like a freshly glazed hopped up black pilsner, just wonderful. Packs a punch with the 7.9, but really, it only compliments the whole picture. Lagunitas does not make a bad beer. This one is exceptional

Opaque black. Nice lace, short creamy head. Hoppy aroma of bright sweet fruit, toasted marshmello with sweet pastry. Soft smooth slick malt, creamy, chocolate, light roast more on the finish, hops with citrus, fruit, all the way through. Want to say umami. Bitter sweet but more sweet, somewhat syrupy, but huge Big pine bitter to balance with the roast. Lagunitas is not shy about hops. Has some salty/ astringency in finish. Gets ashy and astringent as it warms in finish. Bitter linger and salty linger.

Bomber sampled@Rolands Mondialnachlese III, Feb ’15. Brown cola pour. Nose of wet bark, marcuja, liquorice, ash, berries. Same surfaces in taste with some chocolate powder, kept in check by West Coast hops: postmodern reticent fruits. Quite light-bodied. Will revisit in larger quantities.
