There are two kinds. There is the DayTime kind, which is bright and welcoming and then there is the NightTime kind, which should never be confused with the DayTime. NightTime is dark and deep and may take you to unexpected places, places that the DayTime cannot. But then, the NightTime is not suited for ordinary life and ordinary tasks. In fact, NightTime may be the answer for that sort of thing, meaning that those sorts of things may never get done. Things take time in the NightTime, things slow down and you can puase (you have to, actually) and investigate carefully to find that level of objective detachment that is only possible under the spell of the NightTime. Seek the Day, but fear not the Night.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2015 well this is an interesting one. the appearance is coca-cola dark brown with a nice light brown head. the aroma is.... interesting. There is pine and resin present, and also juicy mango and grapefruit. it?s very pleasant. Lots of citrus, resin, pine, and floral notes here. The slightest bit of roast is there, almost non-existent. The more I sip on it the more I like it. Nice sticky mouthfeel, too.

Roasty, but crisp. Hints of coffee and nuts, earthy with a nice balance of hops. Bitterness is kept to a minimum.

Pitch black. Smells like black ipa. Mix of hops and malt. Had six pack from Holmes. Good.

Bottle. Dark brown, nearly black pour with a thick beige head. Fairly mild aroma, some roasty malts and bright citrus showing through, a bit of creamy chocolate. Taste is big bright citrus with a crisp bitter edge, but supported by rich, roasty malt, fairly thick texture and a bit of a creamy chocolate finish. More fruity as it warms. A really nice black IPA with a lot of body and a good balance.

On tap at The Ginger Man, NY. An almost black one, topped by a finger-thick, dense, light beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted, with pine cones, orange zest and resins. Itís full-bodied and semi-dry with a nice carbonation level and flavors of light roasted malts, zest and pine cones and a nice bitterness. Lightly roasted hop dominated finish. Quite lovely this one, more focused on the hops than the malts, which is the way I like it. 150624

Aroma: melasa, pine and resin, roasted notes. Appearance: black color and beige thinhead. Taste: high bitterness (herbs abd resin), herbal notes, slightly roasted, melasa, bitter chocolate, quite dry. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Interesting variation on Black IPA, nice pine bitterness.

This is excellent, probably the best black ipa I have had. Aroma is full of chocolate and roasty malts but theres a hoppiness that cuts throught and you get a nice blast of citrus pine. Taste is really really good. You get the best aspects of a nice heavy chewy stout but theres a huge bitterness from the ipa side of the beer. Itís citrusy and tropical and meshes perfectly with the stout. I really enjoyed this beer, it was a nice breath of fresh air for me. Itís very different but executed well and like I said, the best black ipa Iíve had so far.

Hops fill my nose with a malty sweet underlying body in this clear super deep red brew. The taste is hoppy sweet with a hint of licorice it seems. It's medium bodied and a decent carb.
