BlackForestCO (479), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA May 13, 2008 Updated: Jun 9, 2008 08 Bottle. Pours a clear ruby-copper color with a thick beige head that stuck around quite well. Really nice aroma of caramel, some nice citrus (grapefruit, orange) with some resinous pine in the background. Nice lightly sweet caramel malt with some light toffee with strong undertones of grapefruit and other citrus, leading into a lightly piny, dry finish. Very full, slick mouthfeel. I only tried this because I didn’t realize the guy I was going to send it to could already get it, but I will probably pick up a few more now.
Nik925 (52), California, USA Jul 22, 2008 SUPER SWEET - great malt but a lot of it - a super lot. Great hop taste but not enough of it, alcohol taste is almost absent which is amazing, well made, but just too much malt sugars remain for me. fidel (69), Livermore, California, USA Jul 20, 2008 Amber, thick, sweet, fruity, piney, malty, alcohol, caramel, bready, hoppy finish. surffisher (131), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jul 14, 2008 22 oz. bomber, pours a deep red-amber with a massive frothy tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is all piney hops on the pour with layers of toasty biscuity malts, caramel, and toffee coming later. Fruity esters are a bit subdued but include prunes and plums and some raisin. Flavor is nicely balanced, but dominated by the toasty malts with piney hops providing balance into a moderately dry finish. The body is medium to medium-full; smooth, with moderate carbonation and a perfect amount of warming. Overall, an excellent barleywine. Extrordinarily drinkable, as it balances a bit to the thin side, though still supportive of a relatively high ABV and full flavors. dunkpigen (253), Kolding, Denmark Jul 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours amber with a small offwhite head. Aroma and flavour are both sweet, althea drops with some hoppyness. sunevdj (1347), Copenhagen, Denmark Jul 13, 2008 Pours a clear red with a small tanned head. Smells of rye. Sweet with lots of rye and caramel flavours. Slightly bready. Full bodied. Low carboantion. Slightly bitter finish with an alcohol touch.
