"a good beer, but not a great barleywine. itís one of those styles that you really have to mess up to be bad, so this one isnít bad, just uninspired. Iíve tried it twice, and will stick to others in the future."

This is review of 2011 vintage Aroma is of sweet candied apricots, burnt sugar, slight alcohol. Body is a murky copper brown. Small tan head, lacing was above average. Taste is of burnt caramel, belgian rock sugar, sweet alcohol. A mix of brandy and port. Almost like a poor mans utopias. Palate is syrupy and under carbonated. Head didnít contribute much. Overall this beer is outstanding. Slightly boozy, full of sweet toffee and dried fruit. The gold standard for barley wines, canít get enough of this beer

Lothore (555) - California, USA - MAR 29, 2014
A- Pours a clear amber hue with a massive, 3 finger off white head that leaves tons of lacing on the way down. S- Caramel, brown sugar, piney hops. T- Taste is bready, hints of caramel, pine prickles the tongue about halfway through as it slowly takes hold and smashes your palate along with the alcohol. M- Thick with low carbonation. D- This is a tasty beer but one that should probably be laid down for a least a year. The alcohol and hops are very strong right now.

650 mL bottle. 2009 vintage. Says 11%. Lovely, strong, coppery colour with a small, short-lived head. Smells exactly like a barleywine should, with toasted brown sugar and booze at the forefront. You get the sense that this one will be big, and it doesnít disappoint. My only real complaint is that itís a little too boozy - everything else gets pushed down a little. Good stuff, though.

2001 vintage courtesy of the cheese man. This has really stood the test of time. Distinct woody tobacco aroma. Flavor is like a chewy pipe tobacco followed by dark fruit. Not a hint of cardboard or any off flavors very well done

harrymel (1503) - Spokane, Washington, USA - DEC 25, 2013
2011 Vintage A: Pours a cherry red with single finger light caramel which dissipates quickly. No lacing. Vibrant color. S: Malty, caramel malts, sharp alcohol tones. Sweet nose. Wish there was a hare more hop on this; the hops are simply piny/resiny and weak for an American BW. T: Sweet. Very sweet for an ABW. Little to no bitterness from hops. Although I like it very much, I donít think it fits the profile for the style. M: Medium with low carbonation. No resonance. D: Exceedingly drinkable: could do this all night. I think with a year or two on it, the beer could shine, but itís a gamble. Serving type: bottle 02-24-2011

Not as good as the Brown Shugga, but still a pretty great barleywine. Rich and slick on the tongue, tons of caramel and brown sugar.

On draught at roscoes 2011 - pours cloudy amber with medium brick off white head. Nose of malt, caramel, and grass. Definite aged taste with caramel and malt accents. Not a fan of aged barley wine however not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

crackedmachine (473) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUL 23, 2013
2008, 9.7%. Pours hazy mahogany with floating sediment and minimal tan head. Aroma of toffee and caramel mingling with a bit of pine, hint of tobacco. Similar in flavor: sweet candy toffee offset by mild hop bitterness and a little booze burn. Low carbonation is the only significant drawback here.
