COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In The beginning, there were ales. As far as anyone knows, the first beers made were ’top-fermented’, which is longhand for ’Ale’. Sometime long before the 1860’s, beers became popular that were made in Northern Europe with a bottom fermenting yeast strain that liked the colder temperatures. Because they had to spend weeks aging before they tasted their best, they were known as ’Lager’ beer. Lager is the German word for ’storage’. Since they had to sit a while, they took up more time and space and as such were harder and more expensive to make. Where ales are meaty, lagers are sinewy. Where ales are street, lagers are ’haute couture’. Where an ale might hit you over the head and take your wallet, lagers donate to charity and adopt stray cats. While an ale might steal your car or try to date your daughter and keep her out all night for who-knows-what purpose, a well bred lager would offer to clean your house while you’re on vacation and leave fresh scones and coffee for you when you return. Now, don’t get us wrong, ales can be a lot of fun to hang out with when you’re in the right mood, and if you have bail money on you. But what’s wrong with livin’ uptown from time to time, on a nice street, where the doormen all wear those little uniforms, the air smells of flowers, and lagers rule the Earth. Cheers!

04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05 12oz bottle. Yellow-gold, dark for a pils. Requisite graininess, fresh, saazy. Great pils flavor is a great quencher and excellent palate cleanser. Good amount of acidity. Balance between grain and grass is on the money.

Fresh aroma of puny hops and some grass. Golden straw color with small head. Quite a strong flavor of grainy malt and grass. Also has that corn syrup taste to it. A fair Bohemian pils.

Saaz hops grassy nose. slightly underattenuated. Grainy and odd mouthfeel. Hops are the only saving grace.

Orange color, small layer of head. Fizzy carbonation. Hoppy but also grainy. Slightly alcohol in the taste. Medium lasting. Intense hay nose. Kind of body less though.

Fresh hop nose that is more like an ale - missing the musty, lager aroma. Beautiful gold color and a low lathery head. Medium body of a light citrusy malt with a hint of pear and maybe honey in the background. This quickly gives way to a broad hop tinge that fills the mouth. Crisp texture that is really hop heavy. I quite like this as a beer in and of itself, but it pushes the limit of the style (which is probably a good thing). Kinda reminds of Jever.

A good pils. Hazy golden body under a big, frothy white head. Aroma is hoppy -- not so much citrus as German hops. More a slightly metallic note. Light bodied, thin. Decent flavor. On the hoppy side. Not much character but not bad.

Clear orange gold. White head, nice lace. Grassy, hay nose. Pleasant carbonation, nice mouthfeel, great malt foundation, assertive grassy hops. A very nice pils in my opinion. Simple, yet straightforward, and well made, no doubt it.

On a business trip to San Francisco I went to the Buena Vista Cafe to get one of their famous irish coffees. The irish coffee was great, but I noticed they had their own brew on tap which I suspected was probably a rebadged version of another local brewery, I emailed them to determine if this was true but recieved no response. I could not resist trying a glass. These ratings are from notes scribbled on a napkin. Dark golden with a dimishing small off white head. Good malt with a dry and hoppy finish. It sure tasted good at the time.

This pils pours with a golden body topped by a thin head with little lacing. The aroma and flavor are both slightly bitter and hoppy with grassy, piney notes and a touch of malt. light to medium bodied, slightly warming and dry.
