In The beginning, there were ales. As far as anyone knows, the first beers made were ’top-fermented’, which is longhand for ’Ale’. Sometime long before the 1860’s, beers became popular that were made in Northern Europe with a bottom fermenting yeast strain that liked the colder temperatures. Because they had to spend weeks aging before they tasted their best, they were known as ’Lager’ beer. Lager is the German word for ’storage’. Since they had to sit a while, they took up more time and space and as such were harder and more expensive to make. Where ales are meaty, lagers are sinewy. Where ales are street, lagers are ’haute couture’. Where an ale might hit you over the head and take your wallet, lagers donate to charity and adopt stray cats. While an ale might steal your car or try to date your daughter and keep her out all night for who-knows-what purpose, a well bred lager would offer to clean your house while you’re on vacation and leave fresh scones and coffee for you when you return. Now, don’t get us wrong, ales can be a lot of fun to hang out with when you’re in the right mood, and if you have bail money on you. But what’s wrong with livin’ uptown from time to time, on a nice street, where the doormen all wear those little uniforms, the air smells of flowers, and lagers rule the Earth. Cheers!

Deep golden color. Modest bitter dry nose. Mouth isn’t as clean as I would hope, but not bad. Somewhat grassy. Not bad.

Tap at Pub 819. Pint glass. Light golden color reminiscent of other pale domestic lagers. Very little head. Aroma is grain and cereal like a cheap beer. Taste is crisp and light with a grainy overarching feel. Hops are present but nothing citrus comes through. Tastes like a simple beer without a lot of excitement. Rare to see Lagunitas hold themselves back like this. Obviously chose other Lagunitas options...they are much better.

I love how the description of the beer on this page has to clearly define a) what a pils is & b) how it is different from an ale. No wonder, given some of the reviews below that merely punish this beer with a low rating because "it’s not my style." So much for the well rounded beer critic. Have to say I’m a pretty big fan of this brew. Love the way it pours into the glass & how it offers the white as snow crown of foam on top. It’s a crisp & tasty & balanced pilsner. Highly recommended. I wish that a) I could get this in Toronto (I love a pilsner or two after a series of juicy IPAs) and b) that Canadian craft brewers could get a handle on this oh so unhip style & mark a variety of decent pils to choose from. Recommended. .

Aroma of pale malt, hay and grains. Flavour is light sweet with a nice moderate bitterness in the aftertaste. Decent, quite malty Pilsner.

Pilsig-gelb im Glas. Honignoten, pilsig, aber hopfig. Grasige Noten, typische Malznoten. So soll ein Pils sein.

Pours pale yellow, lingering head. Fairly it aroma at first.. though it dissipates fairly quickly. Generally reminds me of big breeds lagers but with more concentrated flavor. Nice hop bitter, a layer of breast yeast flavor, a little spice, floral. Finish is lightly bitter with a touch of must. Relatively full flavored for a lager.
