4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
A very transparent clear copper/orange beer that just looks damn good. I was surprised to find this. My brother said he had it on tap, but I could not find it anywhere. The head is slow to fade, but eventually settles out to a very thin layer. Great looking beer. Piney, floral, and citrus hops are all there. This sucker just lets the aromas out. A very nice smelling beer. This beer is extremely hoppy and I haven’t even tried it yet. Somewhat of a sweet malt aroma, but the hops dominate of course. Slight alcohol burn on my throat. A wee bit too carbonated for me. Not creamy enough, this of course is due to the carbonation. The hop flavor just lingers in my mouth. The bittering hop onset actually lasts a while. You can taste the citrus pine and floral hops. This beer is just very distinguised when it comes to the different hops you can taste. There is very little malt flavor. I can taste the sweet malts, but only slightly. Really good beer that everyone should try. The hops are amazing.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a transparent bright copper with a nicely-lacing frothy off-white head. Aroma of big fresh resiny grapefruity hops and a nice light caramel maltiness. Body starts with good fullness and carbonation with some sweet caramel toffee notes and a great balance of assertive piny sticky bittering and flavor hops. Finishes crisp and bittersweet hiding its alcohol fairly well. A nice double IPA and you can’t beat the price of $3.50/22oz!

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2009 pours a rich copper, almost red, color with a nice tall creamy yellowish head and excellent lacing. aroma is hoppy sweet with notes of oranges and lemon and plenty of sweet bready/caramel malts. the flavor is extremely bitter but not biting with grapefruit and fresh squeezed orange juice. actually smooth for a 2ipa. toasty and spicy caramel malt background. funny....i happen to like this more than most regular lagunitas beers - 5/30/08.. 8/5/8/4/14. re-rate....labeled as "lagunitas" hop stoopid now. after all the jazz, i decided it was time for a revisit. clear orange under a creamy white head. my first thought is that there is something truly special about this beer. SO smooth for 2ipa with a good abv kick. palate is perfect. flavor has no sign of the abv with sweet malts and no astringency. hops are a good blend of floral and citrus. sweet doughy malts. never cloying. oh yeah... can’t beat the price either. just plain awesome stuff.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Very sweet and hoppy aroma. Kind of light amber in color with a small white head. Flavor starts out on the sweeter side but the hops rush in and take over in th finish, and linger there for a bit in the aftertaste. Nice northwestern hop flavor with some citrus fruit side notes. Nice medium body. Great brew all around. I lucked out and got it on tap for 5 a pint here in Chicago whereas they could easily charge more for it.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2009 Bottle from Wildberries, Arcata. Pours a bright copper-gold with a thin, fine, off-white head. Lush, resinous hop aroma with orange peel and a slight herbaceousness alnong with some sweet malt and alcohol. Overall dry flavor profile with some sweet aspects in the form of candied citrus peel and a little malt along with other dry hops fruitiness. Very smooth, graceful body that hides its strength well. Firm bitterness that creeps up mid-palate and then fades into moderate alcohol warmth. This is an excellent beer--one of the best yet from Lagunitas; and one of their best balancing acts in terms of hops flavor and structure.

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2009 2008 Strong Ale Fest (Boulder, CO): One of my favorite beers from this beer fest. Bright gold; great head. Very nice malty flavors (sweet caramel and toffee). Wonderful hops (juicy citrus, spicy pine). Hops and malts complemented each other very nicely. Great beer. RERATE, bottle: Not too shabby. Sweet caramel-malt base. Grassy, citrusy hops. Metallic-like burps. Orange in the aftertaste.
