Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a light tan head. The aroma is sweet maty with notes of grass and grapefruit. The flavor is sweet malty and again dominated by notes of grass and grapefruit.

(Bottle 65 cl) Slightly hazy amber golden with an off-white head leaving some lacework. Fat aroma of citrusy aroma hops. Quite full-bodied with loads of caramel and again this overpowering yet pleasant citrusy hoppiness that also leaves a very solid dose of bitterness. 150807

Draught at Rogue, San Francisco. Clear amber, minimal head.Powerful citric graperuit aroma. Sweet with a fair amount of cookie malt supporting the citric hops. Quite slim and drinkable with long bitter finish. An enjoyable IIPA!

Appearance: clear dark gold, fine off white head, solid lace,
Aroma: sweet crystal malt aroma with an abundance of citrus hops producing the definitive sweet grapefruit aroma,
Flavor: lots of hop flavor balanced by the sweet caramel malt, nice long bitter finish, bitterness starts to take over as it warms,

Aroma: same great sweet grapefruit aroma but a bit subdued,
Flavor: flavor has lots of sweet crystal malt balanced by a bitter grapefruit rind character, lots of fruityness beside the grapefruit showing up including tangerine, bitterness is a bit subdued allow the malt and hops stay in control,
Overall: this keg and the one at Trapeeze last month are a bit more subdued than what I had last year at Brick Store, new batch or old kegs?, overall I think it works better even though a bit disapointing at first,

bottle has a lot more of the fruityness up front with the citrus being more in the background, low bitterness,

Aroma: huge sweet crystal and pine aroma with the fruity tangerine and mango showing up later,
Flavor: sweet crystal malt flavor with huge pine character, alcohol heats it up and adds a peppery character, sweet grapefruit comes in a second wave,
Overall: the bottle restores the lackluster performance that comes and goes with the kegs,

Bright, light amber colour. The aroma when first poured is breezy with an almost English hop...ha ha that doesn’t last much. The more it warms the bigger, bolder the hop aroma gets until it becomes seriously ambrosial in citrusy depths (grapefruit, kumquat, calamansi) along with a very powdery, slightly resiny sense of sticking your head in a bag of hops. Finally, the malts start to show through, and the aroma fades from that apex.

In true Californian tradition, the malts are quite chewy, somewhat unexpected for such a pale beer. This crystal-forward and icing sugar sweet maltiness has never been a favourite of mine, though it is more restrained here than in many Californian examples. Overtop of this is a resiny grapefruit hop character with a splash of Simcoey orange notes. Bitterness seems moderate. It’s my sense that the malts do a great job of balancing the bitterness off but unfortunately stand out a bit too much for the good of the beer. In other words, close but not perfect.

The other aspect I wanted to touch upon is the rusticity, both in the hop character (very farm-fresh with the powdery aroma) and the subtle yeastiness. If not truly rustic in the Wallonian or pays du Nord sense of the word, it certainly is by Lagunitas’ standards. Reminds me of Elliott Bay’s Hop von Boorian...Belgian-accented IPA must be the trend this year. Good call.

Golden color; creamy head. Very nice hop aroma, extremely strong resins. Good body strength, good and strong malt flavor without being thick, excellent hopping, resiny and a bit citrusy; and of course the final is very strong and long, not only biter and resiny but also sweet. Monodimensional, but in the direction that I like.
