AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Love the humorous description for the ale, but no apology needed as this is one fantastic brew. Pours a pale copper with minimal white head (left a nice ring and small island of foam in the center) and a small bit of lacing. Nice nose with pine, citrus and pineapple. Good mouthfeel due to the lively carbonation. Taste is full of hops with a good malt backbone. Somewhat resinous reminding me a bit of Maximus. Clean and crips finish with moderate lingering bitterness. Not the typical winter brew, but a nice change of pace from one of my all-time favorite breweries.

12 oz pour from chilled bottle into tulip glass. Orange, translucent, moderate carbonation, big fluffy cloudy white head. Nose is grainy, sweet, cereal, bready, biscuit, fruity, orange, maybe even a little spicy. Fuller bodied, creamy, smooth, a little hops stickiness on the end. I can definitely see the oats. A more complex body than most beers, but it works. Taste is sweet, biscuity, bready, a little fruity, mango, orange, a little rye spice on the end, a hint of alcohol. Really interesting and really good, though distinctly on the sweet side.

On tap. Slightly hazy golden amber pour with small off white head. Aroma of caramel, hops, pine, tropical fruits and malts. Taste of sweet malts, peach, apricot, grapefruit, pine, caramel and syrupy hops. Full bodied, lower carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel and a hoppy finish to smooth out the sweetness. A little cloying in the middle but good beer nonetheless.

bottle poured into a snifter..golden hue with a fluffy white head..aroma of citrus,pine,caramel,florals..tastes of mango,apricot,caramel,pine..nice finish..more of a DIPA than a strong ale but excellent nonetheless.

Nice peach and mango aroma with some cereal sweet malts, pine needles, and caramel. Taste is very much like the aroma: grapefruit and pine, tropical fruits, with some sort of spice and caramel in the finish.

Keg at the Hanging Bat. Surprised at how old school this seemed to be. Light clear sparkling russet brown with a good hop nose and supple mealiness of the body.Smooth yet stealthily big and round

Wow, didn’t expect this to be so damn good for some reason. Poured into a goblet. Beautiful, amber/orange color with a decent amount of carbonation. Smell right out of the bottle was very...fruity? Literally had no idea what to expect out of this beer, and what a pleasant surprise it was. Head is super thin, pale color, dissipated almost completely within minutes. Taste is just plain awesome, fruity, clean, no hint of the high ABV to me, and .. spicy and bready at the end. Niiiice.

I didn’t catch the ABV, a bit surprising. It had a fair sweetness, though the pale malts tended toward a nice breadiness, some caramel components, fairly strongly hopped but had enough malt backbone to make a nicely balanced beer. Very drinkable.

12 oz bottle. Clear light amber, tight tan head, sticky lace.
Aroma is sweet caramel malt, followed by a healthy dose of hops. Pine, resin, citrus, grass.
Flavor starts sweet, light caramelized sugar, then spice, grapefruit, tropical fruit.

Pours an amber gold with a nice head of tightly packed white bubbles. It’s a beauty. Wonderful fresh aroma although, malt dominates. Very balanced flavor with malty sweetness giving way to sour, bitter, and then umami. Palate is nice with a lingering bitter and some stickiness. It’s a great brew.

Bottle. Lightly cloudy golden amber pour with a pillowy white head. I had no idea what to expect here, but it smells like a delicious IPA - lots of bright citrus with some sweet fruit notes underneath. Flavour is fairly sweet, bright citrus and pine, resin notes and tropical fruit. Pretty nice.
