AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

The aroma is tropical...pineapple, papaya...yes! Taste is hops hops and more hops! Yummm...but with a nice malt profile holding things in check. Nice balance. Sorry I only bought one of these. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Appearance: clear golden with quickly dissipating white head. Aroma: floral, piney, grassy and citrus hop bomb with sweet sugary and bready malt. Beautiful! Taste: floral hops and pineapple throughout with just a little sweet breadiness but nothing as strong as the aroma, ends slightly peppery with piney, grassy bitterness. Mouthfeel: Thin to medium body with medium to high carbonation. Overall this beer is so freaking delicious. It's a perfectly hopped brew with a perfectly balancing complex malt profile. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle Whole Foods. Light golden; smaller white frothy head dissipates to a very sparse covering with a medium ring; light lacing. Aroma pineapple, pine, tropical fruit, bread, caramel. Flavor has less of the tropical fruit than I expected and exhibits more pine and bread as is more typical of the style (and, sorry Ratebeer, but this is an IPA, not an American strong), but there is definitely a pineapple vibe throughout; piney bitter finish is really well balanced, as 60+ IBU’s is nothing to scoff at but it’s certainly not out of place in here. Medium body, frothy carbonation, barely sticky. I’ll take Brown Shugga over this any day but that’s just personal preference, I suppose. Definitely bears resemblance to Lagunitas’ Daytime with the pineapple aroma, just much bigger. Good stuff.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2013 New review - see below for old one. Clear orange, lots of foam but no lacing once it dissipates. Sprucey resin aroma. Strongly bitter flavor with the same resinous character and a touch of citrus. Bit of an unpleasant chemical aftertaste. Much much better than my first bottle. Clearly there was something wrong with that one. Old review starts here: Bottle. Cloudy orange, no head or lacing. Cat piss aroma with some citrus and Christmas-tree pine. Very bitter, a bit of skunk-like flavor, acrid in its sharpness on the palate. I love very hoppy beers but this is just foul. Vile. I can?t fathom how anyone could like this beer. Lagunitas sucks indeed.

Bottle poured a clear tarnished gold with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of straw, skunk bud, pink grapefruit, pine and tangerine. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of strawe, pine resin, grapefruit and light tangerine with a smooth dry moderatly bitter lingering pine finish.

Somewhat hazy golden pour. Thick white head with lots of lacing. Aroma is mostly hop. Spicy, floral, somewhat dank. Not a lot of malt in the aroma. Hop forward flavor as well, but more balanced than the aroma. Dry finish. ---Rated via iPhone

Aroma is mango, pineapple, and hop resin. Appearance is bright orange with a fluffy white head. Taste follows aroma but adds a bite of rye spiciness. Excellent brew.

12oz bottle from Belmont Station. Purchased good and fresh. A: Straw coloration drifting into orange. Clear with a good refraction through the glass. Fluffy almost white head. Aces. N: Fever for the hops. Pine and earth are dominant with the pineapple and mango playing back up. It’s a deep full scent with that cracking, sweet nature I always attribute to a well done dry hopping. A deeper inhalation yields some clementine and passionfruit. T: A taste that can only be referred to as dank. (Need to jazz that deScription up a bit.) Pine needles and evergreen forest floors. Bites and stings with lupulins. (Lupulins are sedatives. I will sleep well tonight.) Needs more citrus, though. M: Scraping and filling. Alcohol’s second string. O: This beer makes me verbose and lyrical. (Or pretentious? I don’t think Lagunitas has that aim, though.) This is an all star beer that I buy every time it comes out, which, now shouldn’t be a problem with the expansion in place. Lagunitas sucks, indeed.
