AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

On tap at Brouwer’s. Pours a golden honey color, with a smallish head. A hop bomb this one is! Super-smooth for what must be the polar opposite of Brown Shugga. Like a slightly heaver and hoppier version of their standard IPA. Supremely drinkable, and delicious. Very impressed, and I’ll take this over Brown Shugga any day of the week.

Tap at Hoppy Monk El Paso Tx-pours bright light orange with a film-y soapy off white head. nose is floral sugar coated hops lots of flowers and tropical notes. flavors of candied sweet hops very tropical and a bit spicy from the rye malt. long floral finish with some astringent resinous notes very lovely mouthfeal. This is a top-tier beer from this brewery for sure. love the hop notes on this one. the floral and tropical aspects make it pretty damn nice. nice work lagunitas and this DOESNT suck!

Clear amber like colour. hoppy aroma, resin and pine cones. big hoppy flavour with a nice dry hoppy finish. this brewery should suck more often.

12 oz bottle. It pours a clear gold with just a hint of orange. The head is white and dissipates quickly with no lacing. The scent is sweet with some melon and citrus. The flavor is nice. It is fruity with melon and some tomato. The sweetness is there for balance and there is a nice hoppy bitterness in the finish with some grapefruit and pine. It reminds me of Surly Abrasive. I don’t like the tomato summity flavor but other than that it is a good one.

Thanks to Matt for this. Pours a bright golden with a thin white top and great lacing. Aroma is big grapefruit hops and light malt. Taste is well balanced with a strong grapefruit hop bitterness. I love the stereotypical Lagunitas hop presence.

Tap. This beer was excellent! Pours to a glowing golden body. A sweet looking starched white head sits atop with some beautiful lacing. Vibrant body. The aroma is pineapples and some sweet candi sugar. Mild grass. The flavor is sweet pineapple and mango with candi sugar and papaya. The palate is sweet but balanced. A nice sugary texture.

Bottle. Aroma is big and hoppy, lots of grapefruit rind, perfumey pine. Aromatic hop-driven palate, really nice and fresh, heaps of citrus, some pine resin, crisp and bitter. I’m torn-- I love the Brown Shugga, but now I love this too...son-of-a...!!!

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a fluffy white head that slowly drops leaving sticky lace upon the glass. The nose is an enticing blend of big grapefruit and softer piny hop notes over a sweet pale malt. Medium-bodied and soft with a big tongue-squeezing bitterness at the finish. Like the nose, the flavor is a big hit of grapefruit hops over pale malt with a lingering slightly resinous finish. This is some tasty stuff. I hope they screw up their brewing schedule again next year.

12oz bottle from Discount Liquor Milwaukee, Leftovers packaging. Pours a crystal clear, bright yellow color with a white head and some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, grapefruit. Citra hops. A little heavy on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, the mixture of grains comes through, nice Citra hop taste, with a nice, clean, bitter hop finish. Very tasty.

Tasted 1/14/12. 12oz bottle. Pours filtered with a lively golden hue. Tight bubbled white head. Aromas of candied grapefruit hops and other assorted citrus fruit. Full bodied and definitely hop dominant. Nicely sweet and fruity. Good complexity of palate with the sweet, tart and bitter being the most noticeable. Grassy and grapefruity hop flavors with notes of oranges and tangerines. The malt bill is seemingly complex but still overshadowed by the hops. The alcohol is well blended and adds to the overall aesthetic of the brew. Quite nice for a one off.
