AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Great beer! Served at a good temperature, with a nice, off white, foamy, frothy head that soon settled to a thin cover and plenty of lace. Color is a very clear yellow amber with lots of bubble trails. Aroma is hops on top, then pineapple, resin, tiny bit of citrus, leather, earth. Flavor is similar to nose, quite dry, good carbonic tang, a bit earthy. Body is great, ditto carbonation and a little chewy. Finish is like flavor, some alcohol warmth, and has good length

Pours a bright golden color with a thick, creamy white head...nice lacing. Aroma is big on citrus with peach, mango, and spicy grapefruit. Flavor follows suit...very notable peach and grapefruit, nice spice, and some earthy rye notes. Mouthfeel is creamy and the finish is dry and lingers with spicy grapefruit. Drinks like a nice IPA or almost a DIPA. Very nice.

Bottle to glass. Bright and clear caramel orange in the glass with a slight white head. Aroma is light hop bitterness, some sweet malt, a bit of grainy character, pine, and a small amount of honey-type sweetness. Taste is a nice, balanced bitterness with some pine, a sweetish malt backbone, and relatively clean bitterness through the finish. Maybe some malt complexishness in there as well. Pretty solid and perfectly enjoyable beer and I like that the bitterness is not over the top.

A gold color with a stable creamy head and a bit of lacing. The aroma is hoppy with a lot of pine scent. The flavor is mild hops with some citrus and the malt profile of a pilsner or gold lager along a fair amount of carbonation. It’s basically a strong pale ale and definitely doesn’t suck.

Lagunitas in their self-deprecating amiability christened this ale "Lagunitas Sucks", this a jab at their own inability to house their saccharine induced Brown Suggah Ale this year. The result of their debatable ineptitude is this deft, floral hand grenade of a brew that provides skunky aromatics and a bitter palate. Overtones of grapefruit and lemongrass stamp the tongue, while its impressive abv armwrestles you to the table (7.85%). When thought of as a stand alone brew - and not a substitute - this is a pleasant drinking experience.

Pours a nice IPA’ish orange color. The aroma is of big pine hops with a nice malty breadyness. The taste is of great hop bitterness with a nice barley oat smoothness. Nice drinking "holiday" beer.

12oz bottle split with Anndiesel. Filtered orange-tan. Respectable long-lasting and glass lacing head. The hop character is a mix of orange soapiness, mint, tropical fruit. Clean golden malt tones, a lot of depth from the "cereal medley". Pretty good, but not great or really that different from most Lagunitas products.

Bottle Pours a clear, deep golden color with minimal head. Nice, hoppy aroma with a thick sense of malt as well. Interesting flavor. Smoked malt and a nice hit of brown sugar. Dry finish. Pretty damn good beer. I love Lagunitas.

Clear golden amber color with a thick and creamy white head. Rich aroma of dried apricot, pine, a bit of lemon, and rosemary. Flavor is mildly bitter, with some more piney hops aroma in the finish. Smooth on the palate. I’d say this is a good substitute for Brown Shugga.

I enjoyed this beer in place of the Brown Shugga, it has an amazing hop character! It almost punches you in the face with citrus!
