AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Wow terrific beer! Pours a dark gold with a small white head. Overwhelming aroma of pine and pineapple. Tastes like resinous hops, lots of citrus and sugar. Sticky mouthfeel. Amazing beer.

Pours a beautifully clean and sharp gold with two fingers of sticky bright white head. Wonderful bouquet. Very bright hop character with lots of citrus zest and a light piney character. Very leafy and green, lovely. Very clean hop flavor with a nice resinous and citric character. Medium body with a clean mouthfeel and medium bitterness.

12oz bottle. Pours a light, clear golden orange with a fluffy white head that leaves really nice lacing. Aroma is pungent and in a good way. Tons of juicy citrus with pineapple and grapefruit leading the way. There is some pine resin but much less than the tap version which smelled like an evergreen forest. Taste is not quite as big on the citrus with a little less grapefruit and a little more floral hops. The finish definitely has some pine and a sticky resinous bitterness that lingers on the palate. The taste also has a bigger bready malt backbone than the aroma. The mouthfeel is excellent, medium bodied, strong carbonation and really sticky through the finish. This is undoubtedly one of the best things I’ve had from Lagunitas. I’m not sure why they’re never put something like this out before as it is better than any other IPA they’ve produced. Excellent beer.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2013 Bottles. Orange golden with a white head, bits of lace. Nose is super resinous, grassy, bits of grapefruit zest. Flavor is similarly heavily hopped, resin, citrus, grasss, light pepper. Flavor shows medium bitterness, medium citrus-like sweetness. Medium bodied, slick, with average carbonation, with a bittersweet finish. Enjoyable. I go back and forth with this one, but damnit it may be the best ipa I can get regularly if only for a month out of the year.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Clear golden yellow with a sudsy white head. Nose is sculpin-like with lots of tropical fruits and citrusy grapefruit with a bit of pine. Much more pine in the taste than expected, like sucking on a pine tree. Notes of citrus and some sweet malts...and a bit of spicy rye. A nice, bright IPA and a good sub for brown sugga.

Pours clear golden/orange with a large off-white head. The aroma is very hop forward with grapefruit, tropical, piny and floral notes along with some sweet mildly toasted malt and some papaya. Medium body that is fairly crisp with some semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts out with pine, citrus and funky hops along with some malty sweetness. The finish is still hop heavy, but sweeter. Very enjoyable beer.

12 oz. bottle- Pours clear golden orange with a thin head that reduces to a collar, it actually looks alot like Mead with a little carbonation. The aroma is all hops, an explosion of citrus and bitterness, peaches, I love that smell. The taste is sweet citrus up front, followed by a dry bitterness that follows the beer throughout, passion fruit is prominent. Body is medium, carbonation could be higher. Liked the beer, but it seems like a Double IPA to me, I think someone entered this in the wrong category, American Strong Ale?

Damn this is good. It’s almost like Bell’s Hopslam, just less alcohol. Tons of citrus, tropical fruit, and pine. Very danky as well. Taste is very hop forward with a lot of citrus and tropical fruit. Sooo damn good.

Intense pine aroma. Nice resinous mouthfeel. Tastes almost like it was cedar aged. Overall very good IPA. Nice complexity and layers.
