AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Clear golden brown, thin white head. Fruity aroma, lemon-lime, apricot and some pine notes. Very nicely balanced. Crisp bitterness, some floral touches and a light grapefruit pith flavor. Full mouth feel, without being overladen with malty sweetness. Good stuff.

Super clear copper coloured body with an orange glow and a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of bright citrus and grapefruit hops, some alcohol, malt and a little spice. Medium-bodied; Very bright hops at first with a nice kick, showing tons of bitterness, some malt, but mostly a nice bright hop kick. Aftertaste shows a nice rounded flavour with the emphasis on the hops and a touch of malt and sugars. Overall, a nice beer with a ton of hoppiness and a bright glow. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 06-December-2011 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 24-December-2011.

Tap @ PW. Clear gold pour with a short, persistent white head leaving heavy lace. Fresh hop nose with maybe some seasonal spices in there? Medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation. Pine, caramel, resin, tropical fruits, ganja and toast. Finish is nicely balanced between bitter, sweet and umami and leaves you wanting more. I’ve followed the sad tale of the Lagunitas shipping ’disaster’ (being a relative term) and loved the Brown Shugga last year, but am very pleased with this substitute, which I earnestly hope becomes an annual brew. Slightly bettered by Lukcy Basartd, but not by much.

Bottle. What an amazing beer!!! The nose is very citrusy. Amber in color. There is a nice balance of hops in the taste that bring out lots of tropical fruits. Thank you Lagunitas for making my holiday a great one.

Sampled on 12/24/2011. This American Strong Ale pours a deep orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet, peaches, mango and some other tropical fruit with some very aggressive citrusy hops. A medium to lighter bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, very tropical. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Good carbonation. A very fruity, yet very hoppy beer, that is nicely balance between the two extremes. Niuce crisp and dry finish adds to the hop bite. Not your usual beer from Lagunitas, and definitely not your typical holiday beer. I will miss Brown Sugga this year, but this is more than a respectable replacement. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, dry and crisp. Aftertaste is bitter.

12oz bottle. I wasn’t sure if this would live up to the hype that’s been surrounding it but it most certainly did. Great hoppy aroma with hints of citrus and pine. Flavor/body is a little light but it makes for a great easy drinking beer.

Draft @ Malone’s. Paler gold, white head. Aroma is so interesting. The hop combines new Zealand delicate grassiness and white grape with marijuana. Intriguing. The flavors are not as well developed or expressed and body is thin but still a nice beer.

Bottle from Vienna Whole Foods. Pours a clear pale yellow with an orange tint and good carbonation and a nice white head. Piny aroma with tons of grapefruit and tangerine. Flavor is slightly with sweet and pine and citrus. Overpowering bitter finish. Excellent double IPA.

12oz bottle. Lots of clean alcohol, onion, garlic, pine and a little fruit in the aroma. Definitely a good dose of dry hopping but not my favorite hop expression. The flavor is big and moderately bitter with a fruity, yeasty thing going on and a little alcohol, but the booze is relatively well hidden. I guess I’ll stick with hop stupid. Too bad that’s not in sixers. As a pale, hoppy, strong beer that is a stand-in, this isn’t bad, but the hops could definitely be tweaked in the future.

Bottle… Clear golden ale with a small, wispy, white head. Good retention. The aromatic highlights are pineapple, pine and pink grapefruit. Full-bodied and creamy with airy carbonation. The flavor tilts bitter, but not by much. Rindy, pithy hops nearly balanced by tea biscuit and toffee malts. Finishes fruity, piney and lightly bitter. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!
