AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

I’ve been wanting Sucks for a long time, now. Wow, that sounds dirty... With the innuendo out of the way, let’s go right into it. Appearance is like a beautiful IPA: hazy orange with a frothy, long-lasting head. Aroma reveals floral hops, caramel, pine resin, juniper, and citrus. Taste showcases candy-like malt, citrusy hops redolent of orange cream, toffee, spiciness, and a boozy bite. Mouthfeel is crisp with a stomach-warming alcohol finish. Even in the eclectic Strong Ale category, Sucks is entirely unique. It’s tricky to describe and damn hard to pigeonhole into any one style. Sucks is an Imperial IPA/American Strong Ale thing with lots of West Coast attitude. It’s... Ah, shit. It’s really good, okay? Leave me to it.

Bottle, 12 oz. A hazy, pale orange-golden beer wtih a small, dense, off-white head. The aroma is really lovely, with pine cones, grapefruit and resins, and a whiff of malts. Perhaps a bit one dimensional, but damn lovely. The flavor feels sweet in a way, but it’s very dry on the palate. It’s bitter, full-bodied and with a soft carbonation. Pine cones, grapefruit and a peachy touch in the flavor. Hints of alcohol. Lasting bitter, fruity and resiny finish. Wonderful indeed, wouldn’t mind a steady supply of this back home. 150607

Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, citrus, grape, pine and hop cones. Taste is light to medium sweet and medium bitter with a long citrus, grape, orange and pine finish: Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft,

Pours a pale golden yellow with a thin white head. Aroma is floral hops and resin. Flavor is rye and resin, slightly sweet with a touch of bitterness. Has the aroma of a double IPA, but comes off maltier and less bitter. It’s a good beer.

Keg at Brewdog, Bristol, Saturday 30th May 2015 Beautiful clear warm gold with a sticky white head. Soft in mouth, really quite sweet but lots of tropical flavours. Enjoyed this, a touch sweet was the only real negative. A6 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.6

12 oz bottle. Slightly cloudy yellow golden pour with a medium fizzy white head. Aroma of pine, candied sugar, coriander, lemongrass and grapefruit. Easy drinking medium body. Dangerously tasty at 8%.

Poured from bottle. Citrus and pine hops in aroma. Good lookin cloudy gold with lasting head. Not the hop Bomb I expected, but I taste the citrus / pine hops with a very creamy malt base. Also tasting notes of peach, pepper and maybe a hint of coriander. Very easy to drink for a strong ale. As usual, another excellent beer from LBC.

Clear golden copper hue with a film of sticky foam. Resinous pine and toffee dominate the flavour, some hoppy fruits going on as well, nice sweetness from the malt. Flavour is very bitter and hop-forward, soapy, toffee, bit of vanilla actually. Sweet indeed. Big mouthfeel and nice, soft, carbonation. Top stuff!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a beer can glass today. A: Grapefruit, tropical fruit, and spiciness. Very juicy. A: 1 finger head with an easy pour, receding to a ring and fluff. See through honey orange body. T: Sweet grapefruit, mango, and spiciness dominate. Honey, cereal, and pine are subtle. P: Smooth and a little oily until the bubbles take over. O: This one goes down too easy for 8%. The alcohol is barely noticeable. I’m going to be buying much more of this.
