COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Bottle: golden orange pour with a large white head. Aroma is orange peel citrusy on top of pine needles and a whiff of caramel. Flavor is grapefruit/orange hops with some sweet caramel running into some sticky pine resin woodiness. Palate is sticky thick with a nice sweetness crashing into a hoppy/resiny bitterness. Rather easy and tasty drinking for a larger beer with a nice hoppy pop but not too bitter, will drink more soon.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2014 A: Pretty light on the aroma. Bit of citrus. Floral notes. The usual. A: Pretty nice light amber. Pours thick. Good lacing. T: This tastes really great. Very smooth bitterness. Great citrus note. A tinge of sourness adds something unique as well. P: Pretty aggressive on the palate. Medium body. Overall this is a really great beer. There is a lot of citrus too it that is well balanced with the hops. which are also well under control. Alcohol is difficult to pick up on which is nice, and the beer is still able to maintain it’s subtleties. Also sour on the finish which is really unique. A must try. Not gonna re rate this but picked up a 6 pack on accident that was two years old. Not very good. Not bad but drinks like a amber ale or something. A hint of alcohol sweetness but really no hops or maltiness or anything.

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2014 Clear straw pour with a white head that hangs around for a while. Intense floral hop aromas with some citrus as well. Slight touch of sweetened grapefruit in there as well. Nicely bitter on the tounge, some residual sweetness but mostly finishes dry and bitter. Very good. Tangy bittering hops, some citrus but not too much. This is a damn good beer. Fucken A.

UPDATE: this beer is fantastic in 32oz bottles. Upping the score to a solid 4.1

lear copper hue. Aromas of tropical fruit and citrus. Flavor is full of hop bitterness with lots of depth. Piney, citrusy, tropical, slightly astringent. Very enjoyable beer. Easy drinking.

Pours cloudy gold with a sudsy white head. Aroma is fresh tropical essence with floral hops, pine, and a clean and fresh essence. Taste is tropical fruit, pine, floral hops, lemon zest, and orange. Light with champagne qualities. Superb.

Pours a golden orange. The aroma is intoxicating. Sticky sweet malts and citrusy hops. The taste is better than the aroma. This is a seriously fantastic IPA that took my by complete surprise. This cannot be a one time offering. Lagunitas needs to brew this thing around the clock.

From a 12 oz bottle. Could not determine when brewed. Purchased from HEB here in The Woodlands. Cracked it open into a Mad Elf snifter. Lots of carbonation with about an inch of head that calmed down eventually. Tons of floral bouquet and grapefruit mango notes. Aroma wise on par with the best. As some have said before the taste doesn’t live up to the aroma. As with a lot of Lagunitas beers, it’s really sweet and syrupy, almost like a barley wine. Good hop hit on the tongue. Decent carbonation. Abv not too high. Texas doesn’t get a lot of good beers so I compare all my IPAs to Ballast Point Sculpin which I can get and Sucks is not quite there. If Sculpin is a 5.0 this is a decent 4.2. Also about $4 less a sixer than Sculpin. L Sucks runs about $10 here in Texas. Get it if you see it but I wouldn’t go on a manhunt for it.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is a slightly hazy medium amber with a moderate off-white head that settles down. The aroma is quite nice and generally my favorite aspect of this beer. There is an unusual earthy, piney hop note on the nose with a slight brown sugar note. The body is medium and acidic. The taste starts out sweet but the hoppy character takes over quickly. Not much in the way of lingering hops. Decent enough but I think the hype is a bit off.

12 oz bottle: Pours yellow and orange with no head and little CO 2 release. Aroma is floral, bright, crisp and sweet. Taste is sweet with an unknown bitter taste. Brew is complex, smooth and thick. Fun, changes while it warms, complex. Great complex brew, fun to drink and great flavor.
