AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

I got one bottle of this and split it with a friend. It’s good but I I expected it to be better so I’m not totally impressed. It tastes like what I’d expect a generic American Strong Ale would taste like but with a lot of hops. I’d probably get it again though since it is pretty good.

Aroma is great hoppy and citrus. Taste is pretty much just hops, there’s not a whole lot of backbone. A lot of hops... I like it a lot, it’s happier than a lot of ipas I’ve had. A great beer I’d get it again!

Smells of citrus, dirty feet, floral hops. Hazy golden orange color. Taste is warming alcohol, herbs & citrus. I look forward to this beer every year. So great.

This fresh hopped beast anything but sucks. Opens with an excellent fresh hopped aroma and delivers on the fresh hop promise with a beautiful earthy taste and an almost orange peel after taste. The smoothness and slight maltyness enhance the profile making the perfect American ipa. Hats off!

On tap. Pours a really nice golden color. Small white head. Smells lightly of spices. Taste starts tangy then moves to just slightly bitter yet sweet. Ends smooth with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Good for Lagunitas! A good substitute! Would drink again.

Bright gold transparent color with small white head and minimal lacing. Aroma and flavor have strong vegetable, grassy hops, like broccoli or something. It’s hardly the citrus, grapefruit, fruity, tropical bomb everyone is saying. If that’s what you want there are better options. I got a 6 pack of it and am rating the last beer, but each experience has been the same. I really wanted to love this beer- may be a bit overhyped. With that said, it was still okay overall- and as always, good price.

Great overall flavor. Pours with nice head. Wonderful upfront hop flavors with a nice balanced finish and not too bitter.

On tap. Cloudy gold pour with a thick foamy white head. Tons of thick lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and sweet malts. Taste just like it smells. Sweet candies and citrus. Very refreshing. Full bodied. Almost chewy. Love it!

amber color; citrusy, bready aroma; lots of citrusy, grassy hops up front with an underlying bready malt base, and a dry, bitter finish; a really great beer

Bottle. The aroma is fresh cut grass. The pour is golden straw. The taste on this is aggressive hops and some faint malt complexity. Really great beer - maybe the best "substitute" anything ever made.
