AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

This beer pours clean with little to no head. A nice eaaant beer that should be extended past it’s limited release status.

A clear fizzy yellow beer. Aroma of green onions, soft malt and a hint of rye. Really smooth and easy drinking IPA with a lower bitterness than the 63ibu implies. Mild citrus and pineapple notes with some malt sweetness. Another tasty beer from Lagunitas.

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2014 Bottle from Wegman?s King of Prussia - should be ultra fresh. Pours crystal clear light copper / orange with a small white head that quickly dissipates to a small film and huge carbonation action in the glass. The aroma is hop heaven.. a big piney flow, followed by some resin, grass, citrus is present enough to balance the attack on your nostrils. The taste is really big bitter up front. A real dry, punch of hop juice followed by a lingering bitterness on the tongue. There is a spicy balance of mild citrus, light caramel, and a good bit of rye character. Fantastic.

Pours a clean deep golden copper color with a finger of sticky eggshell foam. On the nose its full of inviting fruity spicy hop notes; candied citrus, pineapple, traces of earthy pine and some sugar sweet caramel malt backbone. On the palate it follows the nose with earthy pine on the front end some nice malty caramel midpalate and a heap of fruity bitter notes to finish it off. Wow this is crushable and delicious. Even tastes good on the burp. Great hop appeal and balanced almost to perfection....

Golden color with a lasting creamy froth. Big hop aroma with a touch of wet herb. Full nectar with soft residual effers creating a wonderful creamy texture. This brew is balanced nicely with hops fore, mid and finish bittered. Excellent sense of maltmanship. Stupendous results! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2013 Pours dark golden, less then half finger off white head nice small bubble lacing that sticks around for a while. Big fresh, dank, mostly floral and pine and citrus hops, then slight hint of caramel, bready malt. Big hop flavor up front, dank, floral, pine, citrus, mid mouth more big hop flavor, slight caramel sweetness, finish more hop, a little spicy. Medium carbonation, bit of a spicy, hoppy, alcohol bite. Overall excellent, nice dank, fresh, resiny hops, never bitter, alcohol well hidden, try this if you are a hop head.

Draught. Pours an amber color with a moderate white head. Nose has just a hint of sweetness to it, which was unexpected, along with some good floral notes. Taste has a healthy but light bitterness to it. Very smooth drink.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber body with a smallish beige head. A very pleasant and pungent aroma with juicy tangerines, peaches, mangoes, pineapples, zesty citrus rinds, and pine trees at the forefront along with hints of bubblegum and apricots in the background. Goes down relatively medium to full-bodied with just enough crispness. Slightly smooth. A perfect mouthfeel for the style. The taste starts with a bit of caramel and a biscuity malt presence. Lots of juicy tropical citrusy flavors finish off the job. Just a tad piney/resiny. A touch of warming alcohol throughout. Mouthwatering and tongue tingling. I picked up a sixer of this as kind of an afterthought (as I do most Lagunitas) and I ended up extremely surprised. Outstanding!
