AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Amber, clear, and a nice foamy head. Bitterness from the hops tastes great but lingers a little long. Otherwise a respectable beer.

Pours mostly clear and bright golden yellow witha nice foamy just-off-white head. Nice thick and wet lacing. Aroma is potent peach and floral pine hops. Taste is bright and active on the palate. Sweet candied citrus - grapefruit, pineapple, orange - over floral pine hops that close with more bitterness. Dry finish. This beer leaves you with sweet citrus memories. It does not suck, nor does Lagunitas. Will drink annually when available. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours orange with some white head and clear. Nose is bursting with pineapple, orange, citrus, flowers, tropical fruits, sweet fruits, pear and a touch of sweet malts. Flavor is huge, citrus, pineapples, tropical fruits, mango, peaches. Medium light sweet malt in there as well and just a touch of spicy hops in the finish. Great beer

Hey, enjoyed this. Lots of citrus, but more shades of pineapple than more bitter fruits. Some good grain for a bit of balance.

Clear copper. Pillowy white head with decent lace. The aroma of this brew is unreal. Ima see if it wants to be my best friend. Huge tropical fruit assault. Papaya, mango, some hoppy citrus zest just for fun. Taste is more wet hop style to me. Chewy citrus hop resin. Super hoppy but not overly bitter. The fruit notes really tone it down. Terrific brew overall.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Aroma is huge citrus!! Flavors are citrus, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and slight lemon. Very hop forward but not overly bitter, if your looking for balance though this is not your beer. Great job lagunitas!!

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Pours a clear amber. Strong hoppy aroma that kicks into high gear on the tongue. Pleasantly refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2014 12 oz. bottle from trade. No date but should be fresh since I got it today. Pours a deep clear golden orange with a small white head. Big malt aroma with bits of grapefruit, orange rind, caramel. This smells rather malty for what I expected. Flavor is a big malt bomb with caramel, honey, and densely sweet citrus. Waaay sweet for a sub-8% brew. Heavy slick mouthfeel, sweet and nearly syrupy, with medium carbonation. This was totally not what I expected from this beer. Not bad but not close to the hype. Like, this is wtf level short of hype. I wonder if this is an older bottle. There is a number on the neck but doesn’t seem to be a Julian date so no effing clue.

Retrying this with a bottle I know is fresh. Pours golden and clear with a giant fluffy white head. Off the bat there is significantly more cat pee, pine, lemon peel, and huge florals than last time. Flavor is a mouthfeel of fresh hops, medium bitter, with honey, pine, pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel, and some sweet malts in the background. What a night and day difference! Medium slick mouthfeel with medium or a little less carbonation. A really nice brew that I could have again for sure. Maybe a step or two below my favorites but still very nice. Only complaint is that I would like a bit more carb.

Bottled Mid-November, 2011 A: honey golden ale with a finger of white foam over crystal clear ale. A sheet of white resides and leaves soapy residue. S: Grapefruit, lemons, pine, resin, bubble gum, so many yummy hops. This is so far, excellent. T: Sweet with lemons, grapefruit, juicy fruit. M: A bit thin with hi carb and fairly dry. O: Really a good beer. Gonna have more of this. Serving type: bottle 12-02-2011
