AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Clear orange pour with a nice white head that fades down to thick ring. Really nice lacing. Aroma is strong tropical fruit, pine, herbal, and a bit bready. Taste is a sweet citrus and caramel, with some resin and grapefruit. Nice bitterness with a sweet balance. Slick texture, medium body. Really enjoyable beer.

Golden pour with a nice head and lasting lacing. Very nice nose of grapefruit and other citrus against a slight spruce essence. Almost medium bodied with an average carbonation. The mouthfeel is almost creamy. An outstanding hop flavor with grapefruit the most forward. Spruce and a slight malt sweetness round out this well balanced ale. The alcohol content is totally hidden by the flavor. The finish is more smooth than crisp with a nice tartness and a soft bitterness. This is one of the best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bright orange in color. Fluffy white head. Sweet aroma. Smells like a cake baking in the oven. Bitter sour taste. Almost an onion apple taste, but in a good way. Good overall beer.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2014 Bottle. Pours dark yellow/gold with a 2 finger off-white head with a lot of nice lacing. The aroma is hoppy fruit, citrus mostly tangerine, some pine and earthy notes. The taste is excellent. It’s full of fresh, dank resiny hops with a perfect malt balance, candied fruit. The palate is very smooth and light considering the hop flavors. Medium bitterness and light. This is very drinkable and smooth with tons of flavor and character.

Draft. Poured deep amber with a medium-sized off-white head. Aroma and flavor were grapefruit, tropical fruit, pine, hefty malt backbone with some interesting cereal notes. Struck me -- as it has many here -- as a DIPA.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orangish gold body under a beautiful one inch frothy off-white head that slowly faded. Lots of nice lacing remains. The nose is big and bright with boatloads of fresh and juicy hops, really resiny and dank, while the malt base just sits in the background and doesn’t interfere. The flavor is just as bright and resiny as the nose hinted at. Lots and lots of fresh hop flavor in here while maintaing a restrained bitterness level that could impair the palate. Really mouthwatering with just a light pale bready and crackery malt base that’s fairly dry. There’s maybe a touch of spiciness from the rye in here, but it pretty well gets drown out by the intense hopping. Medium bodied with sticky and juicy hops and nice soft fizzy carbonation. Crazy good IPA for my tastes, though it’s classified as an ASA on RB.

Bottle to glass. Pours a clear deep golden very light amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is packed full of citrusy fleshy fruit hops and a hint of caramel sweetness. Flavor has a bit more malt balance, but certainly still shines through with fleshy tropical fruit goodness. Slight bitterness with a fruity sweetness lingers into the finish. Phenomenal beer, although I’m not sure I agree with the Strong Ale category. More of an imperial IPA.

Lagunitas rarely disappoints. I like that they offer high end brews as well as some that are at a reasonable price. This one is no exception. Copper hue. Foamy head. Grapefruit, bitter taste. Hoppy. This is not an American Strong Beer. Its almost like a double IPA. Cloying wash down and yet delicious. Not a bad brew. An excellent way to end a work day.
