COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Slightly malty, citrusy aroma. Same with the favors, but weaker. This is a few months old, so I’m not surprised.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2013 Pour out of bottle, thanks Caleb! Yellow-orange pour with thin to no head, big mango and pineapple, passionfruit notes, some sweet orange and some nice caramel, biscuity notes. Taste is a nice mix of lemon and pineapple, caramel, slight orange notes, hints of biscuit, finish fairly sweet and slightly dry. Would love to try this again next year fresh!

Golden orange color with thin white head. Pleasant grapefruit butterscotch aroma. Really unique tangy and citrusy clementine flavor with a monster sweet hoppy and buttery finish.

Bottled. Poured bright golden with a short-lived white head. The aroma picked up juicy mango, grapefruit, and floral hoppage over sweet honey and lesser bready notes.. this wasn’t the freshest bottle, so the hops weren’t as brilliant as they used to be. The flavor found honey, bready notes, and lighter fruit at the core.. mixed citrus and grassy bitterness around.. a little sharp on the finish.. OK, but again not super-fresh. Medium-bodied and a bit sharp and bitter on the palate.. OK feel and flow.. I’d drink it again (and will re-rate if I get a super fresh one).

I wish they made this year round. Quit apologizing, it’s better than Brown Shugga!

A - Pours a clear golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head atop. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lace. S - Aroma is full of citrus hops and candied pineapple, grapefruit, and mango, some floral hops, and some sweet caramel malts. T - Starts off with a strong kick of grapefruit and pineapple hops with some good bitterness and a bit of sweet caramel malts growing from the background. Through the middle, some pine and floral hops come through with some more citrus flavor and bitterness. The finish is a mix of sweet candied tropical and citrus fruits, bitterness, grassy hops, and some sweet malt. M - Medium bbodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a resiny and fairly dry finish. D - Very drinkable. Nice big hoppy DIPA with a great hop profile. I really like how strong the candied tropical fruits are.

From notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip. The pour is a mostly transparent, full golden yellow color with straw edges. A regal off white froth bellows up from the beer upon pouring. Levels of lace remain where the beer rested during my glass. The biggest compliment I can pay to the complexity of this beer is that it seems nearly impossible to identify all of the aromas and flavors, so I am reduced to using general descriptors to do the best I can. The aroma has a spicy pine hop base, with a nice amount of grapefruit, apricot, and tangerine as well. As the sweetness comes through, I get some light pale malts, honey, and some caramel. The flavor blend nicely together and roll in complexity. Up front, biscuity bread and honey, some light caramel notes, and then a nice wave of hops that never goes off the bitter end. Spicy pine, grapefruit, lemon zest, apricot, and assorted other citrus notes roll on the tongue as the sip concludes. The hops are strong, but not totally overwhelming. The oil residue mostly clears away from the mouth after each sip, and the hoppy flavor and crisp carbonation mean it scrubs the tongue clean after sip. The overall feel is simple, clean, crisp, and refreshing. Not an absolute hop bomb, but this was quite enjoyable.

Location: 12 oz bottle from jcos, 3/14/12

Aroma: The nose is juicy hops (pineapple, grapefruit, orange) and some pine as well
Appearance: It pours a clear orange color with a nice white head and mid-heavy lacing
Flavor: Tastes medium-heavy sweet and juicy, with the hop bitterness coming though in the finish
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it has a clean, creamy, and smooth feel, and a fairly dry finish
Overall Impression: This one is pretty tasty. I like the juicy hop presence, it gives a nice sweetness, and the later hop bitterness provides a nice balance as well. Another very solid offering from Lagunitas.

Huge tangerine aroma...hops hops hops...but not too bitter. Really enjoying what sems to be citra-hop with a nice malt backbone. Really much like a fruit-filled DIPA, and extremely enjoyable to drink. The hop/flavor intensity reminds me of Monk’s Indiscretion and Bigfoot. Mouth feel is medium and the head retention is great. Even with a giant head, the hop aroma blasts you in the face. Tasted from the bottle @ 51F.

Bottle. Lovely fruity, hoppy aroma. Dark gold with floaties murking up the gold body. Nice lace. Moderate sized white head. Sweet, almost cloyingly so. very lightly carbonated. Not really enjoying this. Hops are completely subdued by the sugars, which have a citrus aftertaste I’m not digging. Not a recipe Lagunitas needs to revisit.
