AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy light amber with frothy white head. On the Nose there is loads of citrus:mandarin orange, ruby red grapefruit, along with some cinnamon, sticky buds and toasted bread. On the palate the beer has a mildly roasty malt flavor with more of that delicious citrus fruit spice combination as well as dankweed/resin. For me this beer is almost as much about the texture as the flavors. there is a creaminess at the beginning that gives way to a slight prickly quality at the end. Have had this a few times and find myself smiling and looking at the glass after every sip. Another winner from Lagunitas.

Draft. Pours golden orange with a white head. Hoppy and fruity aroma with floral and citric notes. The flavor as flowery notes and sweet citrus hops, with some lighter malty sweetness. Very drinkable, really good stuff.

Bottle from sixer. Golden amber pour with white good size head. Aroma is malt sweetness and citrusy hops orange peel, grapefruit. This beer is so smooth and well balanced on the palate. Taste is sweetness and some syrup texture with a citrus hop explosion that doesn’t overwhelm. Finishes dry but not piney dry. It’s a delicious beer and I could care less about brown shugga.

Bottle. Pours a glowing cider gold with standard white head and gentle white lacing. Aroma is rich of pineapple, passion fruit, pine, and more pineapple. Flavor is awesome pineapple juiciness. Some supporting notes of orange peel with a moderate spruce rush. The finish has a definite hops prominence without going full blown sting, complemented by loads of pineapple juice and orange peel. Fucken hell this is good!

Probably the best beer Lagunitas makes. Herbal citrus hop aromas. Tropical citrus hop flavors. Overall a fantastic beer.

Amber pour with a thin white head. Aromas of grapefruit, orange, lemon, pine and slight rye. Flavors of citrus up front with an oddly metallic bitter finish...really good, but the finish is sorta odd.

On tap, served in a pint glass at Jackie-Os. Clear yellow color, very nice thick foamy white head. Light carbonation, great dry texture. Awesome hop nose here, but not too bitter... Very smooth. Great lace left behind, here. A really awesome and hoppy ale that’s too smooth to be called an india pale

12oz bottle pours clear deep gold with copper core and thin white head. The aroma offers up a bold mix of sugary malt sweetness, spicy hops, citrus hops and earthiness creating a classic “liter box” aromatic. The taste is similar with rich spicy hops and citrus hop extract blending into a modest level of sugary sweet maltiness. I can drink a load of this!

On tap at square burger. Pours a golden amber with a thin white head. The aromas are grapefruit, pine, bread. The mouthfeel is dry, bitter and has a medium body. Great brew! Cheers!

Bottle. Pours amber gold with very little head. Aroma is resin, perhaps with a hint of orange. Near full bodied, thinning as the carb leaves. Flavor is resin over rye? It’s not excessively sweet, and seems pretty astringent. Lots of hop in here fer sure. Certainly not a spice/veg/herb xmas ale!
