AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Huge spruce nose - jumped out of the bottle and drop kicked my nose with a steel-toe boot. Big sweet malt body. Some herbal and floral qualities. Strong ripe fruit character. A bit of pepper on top of tropical notes. Really nice hop spice and citrus. This is Lagunitas bread-and-butter; a perfect example of their balls-out, straight-up muscle car horsepower, bull in the china shop approach that leaves little to the imagination but is dead center bulleye and every other cliche in the book.

Deep orange colored, very clear, and has a decent white head. The aromas are big tropical fruitiness, hops, pineapple, sugar, peach, floral, and great. The taste is medium light bitterness, sugary, resin, grass, hops, and good. Big bright and nice.

Acquired this in a trade from San Francisco. Very stoked! Poured into a Harpoon 100 Barrel Glass at 45 Degrees F. A - Two finger crystal clear bubbly head. Light golden color with lots of carbonation floating around S - Tons of pine like a Double IPA with very sweet notes and a hint of citrus. There’s some earthiness to it as well. T - Wow. pine, earth tones and lots of brown sugar just come through so easily. Very drinkable like a toned down Pliny the elder but a whole lot sweeter. There’s a bit of citrus on the after taste M - Huge carbonation explosion on the swish. Medium bodied and very drinkable O - My expectations in this beer were met. I may not be drinking mine until February but I’m so happy this beer came to me even if it was a little past Christmas. Excellent beer and one I hope will return.

Pours a beautiful golden honey which shimmers from the heavy body. Fluffy white head 2 fingers thick. Smells absolutely fantastic. Maybe the best smelling IPA I have ever put my nostrils to. Very sweet citrus. The spice of the rye malts is present, strong orange citrus notes with spicy, pine, resinous, hop taste. Great balance. Piney hop resin left on the lips. The body is medium-heavy yet the nice citrus balance makes it feel a lot lighter. After taste of strong piney hop resin. One of the best IPA’s I have ever had.

maybe the keg i got my pour from was old-ish, but poured at a reputable beer bar, nose was average for an ipa. hints of citrus and fruit rind. taste was pretty run of the mill, bitter, little malt profile at all, light medium body, and discernible c-hop profile. citrusy, but not pungent or resinous. people keep comparing it to pliny, but it was very similar to what i remember racer 5 being. a good ipa, but not the upper echelon.

Light golden orange pour with a long lasting thin foamy white head. Big hop aroma - grapefruit with a tinge of floral and pine. Taste is similar to the aroma, perhaps not quite as hoppy. Very hop forward, but not overpowering, good balance. An excellent ale from this brewer.

12 ounce bottle thanks to Craig. Great aroma of citrus, tangerine, slight grain character. The flavor is similar, a great citrus hop character that its balanced very well against the grain. A great beer.

Holiday leftovers ale. Bottled on 12/30/2011. Poured into a pint glass. A - Lighter than most DIPA’s. Burnt orange body that looks like apple juice. One finger off-white head that sticks around. Nice lacing on the side of the glass. S - Reminds me of nugget nectar. Loads of peaches, mango, and grapefruit. Strong on the tropical fruit with a hint of pine and grass towards the end. No malts present. T - Similar to the nose. Super strong tropical notes that finish slightly earthy and piney. Just a hint of biscuity malts. Long lasting bitter finish. Medium mouth feel, really slick with a nice level of carbonation. O - I had the original batch back when it came out and thought it was liking drinking orange juice. Maybe its the month that allowed it to smooth out a bit, but this is a damn good DIPA. Really hope Lagunitas brings this back somehow.

Gold pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is resiny hops and rock candy. Sweet caramel malt and resiny hops dominate the flavor. Nice carbonation and a medium bodied beer. Pretty nice

Grass and hoppy aroma. Clear blonde appearance. Ok lacing. Taste is very upfront. Strong hopping finished with bitter hop resin. Very easy to drink. Brown Shugga is hard act to follow and this fills in nicely.
