AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a clear medium gold with a fluffy one finger white head. Really great head retention and awesome lacing leaving a nearly unbroken wall down the side of the glass. Aroma is full of tropical fruit as is typical with Lagunitas. Lots of pineapple, tangerine, and mango with just a hint of bready malt and alcohol underneath. Not extremely complex but the citrus is very mouth watering. A very juicy tropical fruit character on the taste that carries for a very long time. Tons of tangerine, mango, orange, and pineapple all backed up by a little bit of alcohol and bread. Bitterness is fairly mild for a double IPA and is just enough to balance out the sweetness. Mouthfeel is really perfect without any of the residual sugar all too often found in this style. Overall, a really amazing IIPA. Extremely drinkable it feels more like 5% abv. Love the tropical, almost minty, hop character and the moderate bitterness. Definitely one to stock up on this time of year and one of the best from Lagunitas.

Bottle. Lightly cloudy golden amber pour with a pillowy white head. I had no idea what to expect here, but it smells like a delicious IPA - lots of bright citrus with some sweet fruit notes underneath. Flavour is fairly sweet, bright citrus and pine, resin notes and tropical fruit. Pretty nice.

32oz bottle to tulip. Pours clear gold, white frothy head. Aroma of candied fruit, pine, citrus and malts. Taste is same. Finish is slightly citrus bitter....lots of toffee, caramel and some brown sugar. Pretty complex, deliciously sweet...yet balanced.

Pours a clear orangish gold with a small white head. Aroma of cat piss(assuming the delicious Simcoe hops), citrus, pine, grapefruit and sweet pale malts. Taste is grapefruit, citrus fruits, light pine and some sweet pale malts. Malty sweetness is balanced perfectly with the bitterness from the hops that ends in the finish and finishes semi dry. Cray to think an 8 percent beer can be this smooth.

Not too shabby as a sub to brown shugga. This beer is a smooth sippa with a subtle sweetness and a nice finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at TNT Taisho. L: pours an unassuming light clear gold. S: killer nose. Big fruit notes, passionfruit, mango, pine, it’s bright and the hop aromas are immense. T: very tasty. The same fruits come through, some grassiness, and touch of malt. F: so smooth, a wonderful balance of bitterness. O: beers like this, Sculpin, and Ruination 2.0 are blowing me away continuously. Bright, balanced, fruity and floral qualities up with the hoppy pine, dangerously easy to drink.

Tasted from a 12 oz. bottle. It poured a mostly clear golden-amber hue with a frothy off-white head and abundant lacing. Deliciously fruity aroma of peach, pineapple and hops. The hop & fruit taste is built upon a solid malt base. Tasty with a nice bitter finish.
