AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Wow what a friggen Suprise! Saw Brown Sugga somewhere on the carton, got excited and bought a sixer. This is better than brown. Especially after the third one....... Seriously though, pours a clear rustygold, mild head. No lacing. Nice citrus, earthy and slight dank nose. Taste of grapefruit, light malt, yeast, alcohol, the the hops kick in and build for 3-4 seconds. Nice mouthfeel, slight astringent aftertaste. Overall one of the better ipas I’ve had from lagunitas. I need this in keg size.........

"i’ll start by saying this does nothing to make it stand out as a holiday/winter offering, especially when you consider the pethora of ipas lagunitas puts out. that said, it’s pretty damn good as a nice, fresh, flavorful ipa. highly aromatic, spicy, piney, floral. lighter in body than expected, but super smooth, tasty, with a nice bittersweet finish. they stick to their strong point, which isn’t anything new, but i like it better than the beer it temporarily replaced."

Poured from quart(!) bottle into tulip. Translucent golden yellow with foamy white head that sticks around. Scent has some floral hops and earthy grains. Flavor is a balance of sweet-ish grainy malt and fresh earthy floral hops. Feel is smooth and wet and creamy all at once. This is a great beer, perfect balance, great flavors.

Pours a beautifull golden color with a nice white head. Aroma is strange. Some slight onion and garlic with pine and hints of citrus. Also notes of tropical fruit and stone fruit like apricot or nectarines. Notes of strawberry as well. Definitely sweet on the nose. Taste is slight pine up front with milder citrus fruit, orange, lemon/lime. Sweet malt, hidden alcohol, finish is mild but lingering and works well. Not an offensive beer at all, super sessionable. Grains don’t shine in this one, but it works. Body on this is tremendous for 8%.

Love the quart bottle and the golden beer that followed. Aroma of bread yeast and spice. Taste of bitter hop melded with malt for a cereal everspice with hint of liquorice. Medium length finish.

It pours golden in color with a light peach colored head. it leaves lacing as the head retreats. It is hoppy with aromas of rye, oats, citrus, and a whiff of barley. There is strong flavors of rye, citrus, and a combination of oats and barley. It goes down well in a way that is fully complimentary of the burst of complex flavors.

I really liked this one. Pours a light gold color with a lot of pronounced aromas. Good price.

Pours a slightly hazy, very slightly hazed orange yellow with a super sticky white head that thins out quickly but leaves tons of lace, nice. Aroma of candied citrus, maybe some wheat or just tons of pale malt, very nice, excellent grass note but its got some more depth to it than just straight grassy hoppy bears, the sweet malt note holds up well. Flavor follows but is just a bit more sweet and sugary that I would like but only by a tad, drinks well but leaves some richness in the aftertaste that sticks around, but it’s winter and that’s just fine. Citrus, candied wheat/pale malt, light metallic bitterness, bit of grapefruit and pine, and some grassy bitterness greeness as well. Excellent beer here.

Large 32oz bottle from Whole Foods Market, Bowery, New York, NY. A dark golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, citrus, tropical fruit, grapefruit aroma. Tastes similar, hoppy, citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit. Nicely complex beer from Lagunitas.
