AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Lots of hop grapefruitish flavor, mild hop bitterness, smooth as a bare baby’s bottom on the end. The beer does everything well and definitly does not SUCK! All that I can say is damn what a great beer!

The first experience is the best. By no means is this a bad beer, in fact it is very good. It just feels like a let down as the best attribute is the aroma. It sets up a tropical fruit, new Zealand ish, ipa that it just doesn’t live up too. That being said is is a very smooth, easy drinking fruity (but balanced) beer.

Pours nice clear golden, bit edging on amber. Beautiful creamy white foam, not too much of it but it is leaving some excellent lacings. Sweet and crisply hop-caramelly aroma, some fruits also there. Taste is full, you can feel the alcohol but it doesn’t really bother, more like helps this beer to stand up even better. Like a barley wine in some sense, at the same time generously hopped and not so sweet and sticky, so liking this quite a lot.

Smell: fragrant, sweet citrus, fruity, pineapple. Taste: sweet malt, grapefruit juice, great mouth feel. Finish: orange rind, pleasant pine bitterness. Very well integrated alcohol - doesn’t feel boozy for the high 8%. (bottle code 033 6 2 0932 2012, tasted 04/13/16)

12 oz bottle, clear orange pour with thick creamy egg shell head, decent lacing, smells of brown sugar, malt and dried fruit apricot and prune, medium to heavy body, syrupy, some honey, resin pine and some spice, citrus, mango and grapefruit, overall good balance although a tad sweet

(Bottle) Golden amber colour with big, frothy, off-white head, leaving traces of lacing. Fruity, hoppy nose with notes of apricots, citrus (mandarin, orange peel), honey, lychee and fresh floral, citric hops. Fruity, hoppy taste with apricots, grapefruit, mandarin, honey, tropical fruit and lots of fresh citric, floral hops in a finish with a generous bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well made, with a fresh, generous hop character. Very nice.

Orange pour, thin white head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Sweet flavor, pretty spicy. Peppery finish. Lingering sweetness. Kind of a weird beer. Not very Complex but tasty.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

Pours a medium orange hue with adequate head. Excellent aromas of pine, grapefruit, and pineapple. Taste is like a hoppy, fruity melody. The malt balances perfectly. Hard to beat when fresh.

8%ABV. Poured out cloudy amber. 12ºSRM. Nose has sweet ripe citrus, with oranges coming to mind rights away with maybe kumquats. There are sweet malt aromas in the nose. Inviting with some nice pine freshness. Mouthfeel is soapy and thick. Palate is full-bodied with nice toasted malty flavors of barley bread, graham cracker and honey. Hops are spicy with cilatro, parsley, with bitter and mint, I immediately get hyssop on my mind. The hops are just about right considering that the sweet malty, syrupy palate just won’t go away. Finish is still bitter and long, but with a strong plant bitter component. Goes on Favorites List !
