Again from a brewery that I have come to appreciate, that deserves more plaudits. Quite intimidating when poured, after a night on the impy stouts... kinda felt, here we go again... But no, very sweet malts, complex even rather than cloying. was this supposed to be a barley wine? Could I drink the rest of the six pack, er no. Not tonight... or probably not before I leave CA! Could do better.. Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 10, 2008 Very thick dark brown pour. Smells sweet like fruit and berries. It was very faint though, much better in the flavor department. Sweet malt flavor with notes of hops. It is very complex and blended. I mainly picked up a cherry licorice/cough syrup thing here. Smooth and warming as the alcohol kicks in. chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2008 Pours a dense mahogany with a creamy 2 finger head. Aroma of berries, figs, cookie dough and brown sugar. As MrBunn says below this has a bit of fig in the flavor.
Has a dry smokiness in the flavor, good hop bitterness. Nicely balanced with smooth malts. Alcohol is well present and the dryness seems to linger. This is not a far cry from some American barely wines that I have tried. More than one at a time could be too much for the palate. Having one though is quite enjoyable. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 9, 2008 Bottle. Color is a lovely brown with quite a few highlights coming through in the light... Head is tan, dense and about two fingers high. Aromas are sweet and dark... dark brown sugar, almost soy sauce-like at times. Flavor is sweet and has a bit of a fig and brown sugar mainstay to it. It almost tastes like an dubble without some of the complexity. Things border on cloying as I head to the finish of this one. cheapdark (2015), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Feb 9, 2008 weird mild rotten fruit fragrance, but in a good way. First taste, ooooh, yes, strong; is certainly the correct style for this beer. Big dark red tinge beer, nearly as black as stout but not opague. Quite rude yet persistently interesting, continuously. Like any other of Lag’s brews, it’s over the top, max for the style and this is american alright. What else can be said, 9% alky finish. Duh. I used to think I gave dis agreers the hairy eyeball but now I know better. Ass kicking. mar (1807), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 8, 2008 deep mahogany pour with no head at all. thick sweet malts and a slight alcohol scent as well. pretty light on the hops but the malts come in and take over at the perfect time. highibus (427), Mill Creek, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2008 Nice deep mahogany color with off white head. Aroma of sweet dark fruit. Flavor have notes of oak and cherry with a slight bit of alcohol. Very nice beer for a great price ($1.33 per single). Probably my favorite Lagunitas beer to this point. milewide (609), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
