Pours dark mahogany brown with very minimal light brown head. Smells of dark, sweet malts, molasses, some raisins, brown sugar. Taste is a little smoky and bitter. Kind of belgian sweet, with a sharp bitter aftertaste. Some hickory smoke, cinnamon, molasses, and figs in the taste. Fairly smooth finish for 9%. Pretty nice.

Bottle sampled. Pours deep bronze with a decent size light tan head. Aroma of caramel, citrus, and hops. The flavor is bitter hoppy, caramel, and sweet

12 oz. bottle in trade from WeeHeavySD. Deep amhogany purthat develops a medium light tan head settling to a fine bubbly layer in a few minutes and leaving some respectable lace. Caramel and toffee are noticed first, followed by some understated soft pine and citrus. Rich, creamy mouthfeel with very soft carbonation and a pleasingly full body. As with the aroma, a malty sweetness comes on at the front, but is quickly followed by a peppery bitterness that lingers on the palate. Although 9% ABV, the alcohol is never really noticeable. I wouldn’t hesitate to have this again.

bottle. Pours brown with a reddish copper tint and a small tan head. Aroma of sweet malt and wheat with a touch of citris. Taste is malt to start, then it hits you up side the head with syrupy candi sugar and finishes you off with some bitterness. A bit cloying but nice stuff.

On Tap at the Flying Saucer in Ft. Worth. Mahogany pour with reddish hues, small tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel and earthy hops. Flavor was rich with malts up front, doughy bread, earthy hops and a bitter finish. Full flavored, medium bodied beer. Very enjoyable, another good effort from Lagunitas.

Short 12oz bottle. Reddish brown color, tan head. Aroma of a BarleyWine. Malty and high gravity. Very niice. Flavor is rich and high in malt character with a pleasant tangy hop bitterness to it . Long finish of bitterness lasts on the palate. I would like to taste this same batch after a few years are on it...

Bottle. Reddish-brown pour with a light tan head. Aroma of light doughy malt and some earthy hops. The flavor also seemed to brinbg through doughy pale malt and some bitter earthy hops and a bit of booze. Light body, pretty crisp with a bitter clean finish.

On tap @ Brew Kettle Ogrefest 2007 2/13/07: Lasting light beige head on a chestnut brown, coppery body. Caramelly malt is strong w/ some toasty melanoidiny (figish)fruity esters. Light perfumey alcohol; Toasted and bready malts get stronger as it warms, and has hints of herbal hops. Well balanced lightly sweet up front, but finishes semi dry, then turns lightly bitter in the aftertaste. Caramelly malt flavor dominates up front, but an herbal hop flavor permeates the mid palate and into the lingering aftertaste. For some reason, there is also a smoky flavor hidden in the aftertaste w/ this one. Maybe it’s "residual" flavor from being in a restaurant w/ smoked foods? Medium body, low medium carbonation, well hidden alcohol for the most part. Finishes a bit dry in the mouth. This one is more my style w/ the hops not being quite so dominant and a caramelly flavor helping to balance the hop flavor and bitterness.
