With a big head, this brew from Lagunitas is a deep brown with copper edges. The nose is very malty with dark fruit and some hot alcohol.
Big and malty like a Trappist quad, there are a ton of complex flavors going on here. Sweet malt, dark fruit, butterscotch, and a dry finish that presents some hop character.
Very smooth and creamy, this is an outstanding beer, and the best I’ve had from Lagunitas.

Ok, this is my second review on a Lagunitas brew and it will most likely be my last. Is their water coming from Death Valley??!! Oh my gosh this brew was horrid; not even worthy of being used in my yard tonic for fear of killing off all vegetation! It pours up a pleasingly rich dark mahogany colored body with a somewhat nice foamy head. The aromas were very pleasing; filled with toasted malts, sugars, and hints of cherry. The taste (oh my) was definitely NOT to my liking. I don’t know what it is but none of their brews possess a well-balanced taste in my opinion. Like a dry, dry wine it was very chalky and it was just something that I could not get around. It was almost like gnawing on a rotted piece of burlap; yeah, it was that bad. So I’ve tried a few of their brews but don’t look for any further reviews on their products (unless someone has just begged and pleaded to buy me one, cause I’m not spending any more of my money on them!).

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Somewhat dark reddish-brown with thin cream-colored head and light lacing lines.
Aroma: Chocolate, cherry, caramel, plum and spicy hops. I smell more, but hard to pin down.
Taste: Chocolate, caramel, molasses and various fruits (plum, raisins, cherry) upfront, with subtle nuances of coffee and clove. Ends with a light bitterness from the spicy English-style hops and roasted malt. Edit: after a couple more of these, are there some Belgian notes going on here?
Palate: Moderate carbonation, fairly full body, semi-dry finish.
Overall: I really like this, and it is different from my previous experience with Lagunitas (IPA, Maximus, Hop Stoopid, Brown Shugga). I was always under the impression that their beers were very American and this is labeled as an American Strong Ale. However, this is very English (and noticing a little Belgian now), but innovative, as it seems to be an English Strong Ale & Stout hybrid. Also, this is 9%? Wow, completely hidden. I would have guessed more like 7%.

2007 bottle. Dark brown with orange colors, lace. Nice aroma of dried fruit, rich caramel and fig, good hops. Earthy, with tobacco notes. Flavor is only slightly oxidized, with great hops, big plums and dried figs, citrus, orange chocolate. Huge bitterness. Full and smooth, silky and nice. Probably much better than when new.

Tasty, but I picked way too hot a day for it.
On tap at Jack Rose, NW DC. Pours translucent brown and relatively small head. Strong, boozy caramel palate. Super malty with nary a hop in sight. Would be a kickass winter warmer.
