Rich aroma with dark fruit, caramel, chocolate covered cherries and a bit of roastyness. Quite the nice aroma. Color is a very nice port red. Roasty and sweet flavor. More cherries, roasted malts, molasses and a very dry and slightly bitter finish. The more subtle flavors are overpowered by the roastyness. Nice alcohol presence and warming. Flavors do not meld very well. FInish is dry and a little pasty. A decent brew but not one of the better american strongs. thornecb (1820), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 10, 2008 Pours deep amber into a snifter. Pancake head with good retention leaves spider lacing as is slowly recedes. Stale caramel aromas. Sweet and figgy. Slight sour caramel in the middle with a bittersweet finish. illinismitty (1811), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 8, 2007 Bottle from Foodery II in Philly. Pours a deep translucent mahogany copper with a nice tan head. I can not pick up much aroma, but with a giant wiff, there is sweet malts and faint floral hops. Initial flavor caramel, toasted grains, and rye that transitions to notes of licorice and figs. Strong bitter, leafy hop finish, along with hints of gin. Boozy and warm going down. I did not care for the finish on this, which makes it somewhat uncohesive. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 17/20 | Jan 24, 2005 Bottle. Garnet body with a thick foamy head. Nose is very hoppy. Lots of malts in this badboy. Notes of crystal malt, caramel, some roastiness, and brown sugar come out. The overall flavor of this is beautiful! Very mild with some sweetness and a great bitter on the back end. Very nice. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 18, 2005 A rich mahogany body is topped with a respectable tan head. Notes of hops, malts, fruit, brown sugar, and cinnamon raisin toast meet the nose. Full bodied and robust. The flavor is slightly sweet with traces of alcohol warmth. Pretty good stuff. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 16, 2008 12oz bottle from Kahn’s, Indianapolis. Nice copper pour with lively carbonation and a strong, sugary malt aroma. Upon sipping, however, a strong hop presence emerges, more on the harsh than the floral side. Fairly well balanced, and certainly enjoyable, but not too distinct from many of Lagunitas’ strong ale offerings. Palidor19 (1798), Brandon, Florida, USA
