mansquito (576), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Apr 10, 2008 Well, this is weird because I got a sixpack of this stuff from 2001-2002. So I don’t know if it improved or degenerated in that time. I am guessing that the high alcohol content made it stay pretty much the same. Pours with an ok sized tan head and a deep red body. Whiff of raspberry at the front along with other fruitiness. Kind of bitter maple syrup taste, but ends with a roasty finish. Hops are present, but malts make up the bulk of the taste. Medium to full body. As far as I could tell it wasn’t bad at all.
Beerman6686 (567), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 26, 2008 Poured a hazy brown color with a small off white head. Aroma was very malty, some dark fruits, and toffee. Flavor was much the same, very subdued hops, lots of thick thick malts. surffisher (132), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jul 19, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours dark, clear copper with a small, diminishing light tan head. Aroma is thick with molasses, brown sugar, resiny hops, and fruity esters (figs). Some perfumy sweet notes linger on the outside. Flavor is much drier than anticipated from the sappy sweet aroma, but still dominated by a syrupy complex malt character overlain with a fairly tangy citrus hop presence. Medium to medium-full bodied, smooth and warming. Excellent strong ale. Jwasciuk (159), Greenville, Michigan, USA Jul 19, 2008 Pours sparkling dark red with an average sized frothy light-brown. Aroma is heavly malty of bread and carmel, moderatly hopy of pine and oranges, moderatly yeasty of plums and prunes. Flavor starts moderatly sweet of carmel and a bit of roast and candi sugar? Finishes more balanced. medium bodied, oily and livley carbonated. JCB (890), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 16, 2008 12oz bottle from Kahn’s, Indianapolis. Nice copper pour with lively carbonation and a strong, sugary malt aroma. Upon sipping, however, a strong hop presence emerges, more on the harsh than the floral side. Fairly well balanced, and certainly enjoyable, but not too distinct from many of Lagunitas’ strong ale offerings. kmeves (981), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Jul 9, 2008 Pours a clear mahogany with a smallish tan head atop and nice lacing. Aroma is fruity sweet, caramel and some toastiness. Flavor is very malty, toasted, melon, cherry, caramel and nice floral bitterness. Full body, sticky texture.
