3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 14, 2010 Poured a transparent light brown with orange hues and a foamy, thick slightly off white head. Looks a bit like an Arrogant Bastard rip off. Smells very hoppy, pine, lemon, resin. Taste is very sugary, bitter with same flavors as the aroma with a touch of candy. Mouthfeel is very heavy with a lasting bitterness. A bit of a Bastard rip off. Drinkable, just could have been more origional for me. Re-rate of a 2007 bottle sampled in August 2010. 22oz bottle pours a transparent, copper amber with a creamy, off white head. Nose is cookies, malts, dough, sweet, a little orange zest, a touch oxidized, port. Flavor is sweet, caramel, salted peanuts, dough, toffee, cookies, orange zest, a little oxidized, a touch wood, apples, port. Medium bodied, lightly bitter.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, caramel, cookie), moderately to heavily hoppy (resin, grapefruit). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Eh. I don’t get much out of this one...generic big hop-and-malt brew.

Bottled. Beer is clear, light brown with a small, white, frothy, quickly and mostly diminishing head.
The aroma is malty with light/moderate notes of toasted grain, cookie and caramel; Hoppy with moderate/heavy resin/pine, moderate herbal grapefruit zest; Light yeast note of basement; Light miscellaneous notes of alcohol and vanilla.
The flavor is moderately bitter, moderately sweet, lightly acidic with a long, warm, lightly/moderately bitter, moderately sweet finish.
The body is medium/full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.
Quite hoppy, but adequately balanced with the rich desserty malt. Not particularly engaging, though.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A well balanced beer that has sweetness and roastiness in the start and gets a little bit more hoppy with time. Surprisingly strong beer too. Got better as I drank it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper, with small head and nice lacing. Aroma of citrus, woods, oak, followed by sweet maltiness. Similiar flavor, has subtle pine notes, sweet malt, and fruitiness. Nice bitterness finish. No way I would have guessed 9.9% alcohol, it was so non-existant. Nice job Lag!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours copper with a small head. Aroma is of fruity hops and sweet malt. Taste is all hops with a lot of sweetness to it. It is a little strange, but has a nice bitter finish. Overall, not the best effort.

3.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 7, 2007 Light malty bread smell. Dark copper and clear, nice medium-sized orange head. Mahogany colored and clear. Strong, full flavor, tipped more to hop than malt. Not my favorite style but pretty good I guess.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: SEP 7, 2009 Wow the db f’d up and put the (really inaccurate) review below, last paragraph, someone else wrote but has my rating. amazing strong ale because it is so smooth. Hides the alcohol. The comparison would be be dogfish triple hopped IPA or founders double trouble but perhaps more barley wine flavor
Ale Noir! Hard nosed and menacing but in a delicous way. Cross between Black Bear Hotrod and GL Eliot Ness. You tasted the 9.9% just in the biting whiskey-like way sam spade would of wanted it.
