4/20 Special Double IPA

On tap at Lagunitas beer sanctuary in Petaluma. All you’d expect from the master brewers at Lagunitas and more. I’m not a huge fan of IPA’s or DIPA’s but I’m glad that I tried this ’special brew’ as part of my 4/20 celebration week. Hat’s off to the brewmaster and the Waldos at San Raphael High who inspired all things related to 4/20. The beer was strong, flowery, euphoric, inspired - a fine representative of the best homegrown products of Sonoma County.

Oh my goodness! Menu says 9.2% (website says 10.5%) and tapped today at 6pm - on tap from Tap25 in Livermore. Pours deep orange, a little cloudy, nice white head that eventually disappears. Smells of pine, overpowering sweet citrus and tastes of earthy, orange/grapefruit, even hops/mary jane (wait...420 is in the title?). Malt is there but hops really stand out. Big, bold, dank, resinous, and sweet...is this the best Lagunitas beer since Sucks? Yep. Great DIPA.

On 4/20 at Harry’s Hofbrau for $4.20 per pint. Massive, massive, massive citrus, dank funk and earth aroma. Beautiful. Pours a slightly haze orange with a full white head. Flavor is pronounced citrus and earth, with lots of fresh cut grass. Strong bitterness, but not overpoweringly so like with many DIPAs. Excellent, dude.

Strong pine medicinal aroma is pleasant as much as it is unique. Orange brew is clear with a thin wispy head. Flavor has a more distinct citrus flavor. Good body and carbonation. Finish is bitter with great complexity. Excellent use of hops.

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh) Golden and cloudy - very nice looking beer. Fruity aroma and hoppy/fruity taste. Very pleasant. I'm not a "hoppy or due" person, otherwise this would get a 4.3+ ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Hazy copper. White small head. Some lacing. Considering the amount of alcohol its malt is well hidden behind the hops. Glad I got to try it. It's tasty ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Grumpy’s NE pours a hazy copper with a small off-white head. Aroma of peaches, tropical fruits, citrus, and resinous pine. Taste of heavy peaches, tropical fruits, lots of citrus and resinous hops (dank), a sticky texture. with graham cracker and some rye malt. Doesn’t taste like 10.5% ABV, this went down fast. Nice!!!!!

Pours golden orange with a thin white head. The nose is def 4:20. Just danky chronic, light citrus and just a hint of tropical fruit. The taste high sweet and medium bitter. The texture is creamy at first with a little pop after. The body is heavy and the finish is long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft on tap at Tribes Alehouse (Mokena, IL). Pours a deeper ruby copper pour, darker body, good reddish copper glow, light haziness. A frothy tannish head atop dies to a film, laces thicker and well. Aromas are fruity, big tropical fruit presence, mango and grapefruit, melon and juicy fruit. Some bready malt, a bit bigger with florals, grass, some dankness. A lot of fruit. Initial is medium bodied, a bit fuller, some strong bitterness meets fruity hops, citrus and tropical fruit meld well. Some florals, gentle pine. A firm malt bill beneath supports, makes it a bit bigger but not a malty girthy beast. The hops and their flavors still lead the way. A bit of fuzzy peach, melon, and bready pale malts into the middle. Firm bitterness, florals and some citrus. More earthy bitter slant into the backend and finish. A bit grainy, some dry earth, gentle pine. Some "pizza spice" hopping, gentle dankness. A touch of ABV related heat as we finish up finally makes it’s way through. A big beer, the sweetness doesn’t take over though, but comes in spurts among a good fruit presence. It’s an impressive beer though but not necessarily the route I take with my personal DIPA preferences. A lot of flavor. Great nose. Not bad. Happy 4/20 (or in my case, 4/21).
