A spectacular fusion of red and black ales. This beer has the depth of flavor found in black ales with the crisp florality of a red. This bomber will blow you away; don't drive immediately after consuming. ---This rating is likely a compilation of my and my roommates' musings over our latest beer pick up. Transfer from BA review on 4-5-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – Pours a mahogany-chestnut color with a thick cream colored head of two fingers. The head has a fantastic level of retention very slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of clingy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a grapefruit hop smell. Mixed with these are some nice lightly roasted bready smells mixed with some caramel and toffee sugary smells. There is a light dark fruit aroma of plum and raisin as well producing a somewhat muddled smell. Taste – While the nose was somewhat confusing, the flavor, which contained all the flavors that were in the nose was actually nicely constructed. The taste begins with a smooth lightly roasted malt and bready flavor and a good level of caramel sweetness. Right from the start there is a grapefruit hop taste as well. The hop starts out weaker and grows stronger as the taste advances. Mixed with these in the middle of the taste are some darker fruit tastes as well as more hop flavors of a light pine and earthy nature. In the end the hop grapefruit bitterness dwindles a bit as more sour and slightly tangy flavors of a more fruity nature, with hints of cherry and plum, come to the tongue. While the grapefruit fades the earthy flavors get a bit stronger, and when combined with the rest and a light alcohol taste, produces a very interesting lightly sour and lightly bittered, sweet and malty flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly chewier side with a carbonation level that is lower than average. The chewier body is very nice for the roasted malt flavors and when mixed with the lower carbonation make for a nice liquid medium to allow the complex mix of flavors (roasted, bitter, sour, sweet) to be sensed and distinguished by the tongue. Overall – This is a rather interesting brew with a rather complex flavor profile, yet it still maintains a great ,somewhat nice complimentarily between the mix of flavors. An interesting and tasty brew.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip glass. The color is a dark black with maroon and dark brown highlights. There is about two fingers of brownish/tan head and small amount of lacing. The smell has a citrus hop aroma that is surprising since the color was pretty dark. There is touches of grapes and figs here that do come out among teases of dark malt. The taste is citrus at first with a big tangerine or grapefruit flavor. There is a flavor of caramel malt that tries to sneak past the hoppy fruit flavor but is pushed back by the return of the hop bitterness toward the end. The feel of this beer is medium bodied and is pretty drinkable but does not seem to be as balanced as intended. It goes down pretty well little effort. With a little age this beer would even out and could be really fantastic. The hops would mellow a little and the malts would be showcased better.

Dégustée (bouteille) le 8 juin 2012 au Mondial de la Bière 2012 à Montréal (D6C3KPPO). Bière brune. Col mince beige crémeux assez durable. Odeur de caramel bien présente, de toffee. Très douce, très sucrée, peu amère. Goût de toffee marqué.

Bottle shared by Tmoney99 in mid 2010. Pours brown in color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have toffee and chocolate notes from the malts combined with some resiny, pine and earthy hops. A solid beer that comes at a reasonable price.

650ml bottle. Sticky, off-white head, murky, deep brown body. Cooked apple, dark malt, slight citrus and spice aromas. Taste is a little earthier than I’d prefer, but the dark, cooked fruit and spice up front off set that a bit. Sticky body. Nice for a strong brown, almost like a dubbel.

bottle. Brown with one finger head. Malty base with the big hops you’d expect from Lagunitas. Good stuff that goes down easy.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a dark brown colored body, yet slightly transparent, two finger white foamy head that lasts a good full three minutes and gently slides in the middle, decent amount of foamy clingy lacing. The smell had a strong caramel malty yet combined very nicely with the hops. The taste had a bittersweetness through the malts and hops leads to a smooth bitter caramel aftertaste, still a quick dry finish. On the palate, it sat about at a medium, somewhat sessionable, carbonation seems pretty good for the style - not too harsh, but still packs it to ya - still its mainly smooth. Overall, good American Strong Ale that I’ll be sure to look for again.

A- Pours a ruddy brown hue with a 1.5 finger tan head which sticks around for a while. S- Hops, hops and more hops. Grapefruit with hints of caramel. T- Deep malty goodness runs through followed by a wall of grapefruity hops. M- Medium bodied with medium carbonation. D- An extremely drinkable brew, especially for the price. Lagunitas rarely disappoints and this is no exception.

Rated on 10-23-2010. This bottled beer pours a medium sized beige fizzy head with a short retention, transparent amber body, fizzy carbonation, and a good amount of lacing. The aromas are citrus, pine, bitter, earthy hops, malt, and chocolate. The taste is bitter, malty, chocolate, citrus, and pine hops. The mouth feel is lively and this beer is medium bodied. Wow! This is another tasty beer as the hops are upfront in the aroma and flavor but not overdone. The flavors meet together very nicely. This is a well rounded beer that is worth trying and a beer that I would certainly drink again.
