22 oz bottle. Pours ruby brown with a big creamy off-white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is piney resiny hops with some fruit and roasted malts.

The flavor is roasted chocolate/caramel malts with some fruit and a good sized piney, resiny hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a solid hoppy brown.

Pours a dark brown-amber. Has a light hop, fruit, malt, and pine. Has a sweet malt and hop taste of caramel, citrus, fruits, and some nuts. A lingering bitter malt and hop aftertaste but not overwhelming.

22 ounce bottle served in a Unibroue snifter. (from notes) Appearance: Pours a clear, deep mahogany color with an off-white head that has moderate size and retention. Numerous spots of lacing are left on the glass. Smell: Clearly loaded with both roasted malts and hops, with piney-fruity-herbal hops dominate. Slight booziness apropos the ABV. Taste: A good bit of sweetness from the malts hits the tongue first, but this quickly turns mildly bitter and remains so all through the aftertaste. Some sweetness lasting into the finish, nonetheless. Slight earthy, but a bit more fruity with hints of dried apricots. Overall, a nice, rich and complex flavor. [4.25] Mouthfeel: Medium body and carbonation. Slight dryness in the finish. The aroma (more than a bit similar to an aged Hopslam) led me to expect a solid hop/alcohol bite on my tongue, but this was not the case with this rather easy-to-drink brew. Overall: A satisfying and tasty brew. If you think you’d like a brown or red ale/IPA crossover, you’ll probably like this beer.

Old rating. Reddish brown. Super hopped malty ale. Big citrus and piney bitterness over a caramel body, didn't get much chocolate. Pretty sweet.

Hoppy floral aroma. Dark red tan pour. Strong hops. None of the malt or chocolate notes per the commercial description. Perhaps ok if u like hops but not something I will buy again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Total Wine in Boca. Probably 9 months old. Poured at home in a snifter. Dark brown with a heavy head. Aroma is good with dark bread, grass/weed hoppiness, leather, herbs. The taste is a heavy matliness with slight roast, a hoppy bitter backbone, bold toasty and breadiness. Its an odd, but good big brown ale. Lots of hops, malts, and flavor. Enjoyed it. Moderate carb, medium body.

looks like a brown ale, but has a rather intense, robust roasted malt and heavily hopped aroma. good medium feel, and full flavored, matching both the intense malts and hops in the aroma. i’m glad Lagunitas keeps making these off the wall bombers, cause they’re all good. 2nd time around - the hops are not as lively as the 1st time. ever so slightly longer shelf life?"

Transfer from BA review on 4-5-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – Pours a mahogany-chestnut color with a thick cream colored head of two fingers. The head has a fantastic level of retention very slowly fading over time to leave a fantastic level of clingy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a grapefruit hop smell. Mixed with these are some nice lightly roasted bready smells mixed with some caramel and toffee sugary smells. There is a light dark fruit aroma of plum and raisin as well producing a somewhat muddled smell. Taste – While the nose was somewhat confusing, the flavor, which contained all the flavors that were in the nose was actually nicely constructed. The taste begins with a smooth lightly roasted malt and bready flavor and a good level of caramel sweetness. Right from the start there is a grapefruit hop taste as well. The hop starts out weaker and grows stronger as the taste advances. Mixed with these in the middle of the taste are some darker fruit tastes as well as more hop flavors of a light pine and earthy nature. In the end the hop grapefruit bitterness dwindles a bit as more sour and slightly tangy flavors of a more fruity nature, with hints of cherry and plum, come to the tongue. While the grapefruit fades the earthy flavors get a bit stronger, and when combined with the rest and a light alcohol taste, produces a very interesting lightly sour and lightly bittered, sweet and malty flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly chewier side with a carbonation level that is lower than average. The chewier body is very nice for the roasted malt flavors and when mixed with the lower carbonation make for a nice liquid medium to allow the complex mix of flavors (roasted, bitter, sour, sweet) to be sensed and distinguished by the tongue. Overall – This is a rather interesting brew with a rather complex flavor profile, yet it still maintains a great ,somewhat nice complimentarily between the mix of flavors. An interesting and tasty brew.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip glass. The color is a dark black with maroon and dark brown highlights. There is about two fingers of brownish/tan head and small amount of lacing. The smell has a citrus hop aroma that is surprising since the color was pretty dark. There is touches of grapes and figs here that do come out among teases of dark malt. The taste is citrus at first with a big tangerine or grapefruit flavor. There is a flavor of caramel malt that tries to sneak past the hoppy fruit flavor but is pushed back by the return of the hop bitterness toward the end. The feel of this beer is medium bodied and is pretty drinkable but does not seem to be as balanced as intended. It goes down pretty well little effort. With a little age this beer would even out and could be really fantastic. The hops would mellow a little and the malts would be showcased better.
