4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 chickenflea (280) - Oviedo, Florida, USA - JUL 3, 201022-oz bottle.
I am really starting to like this style.
A beautiful beer. Rich dark and red-tinted with a tall tan head and wonderful lacing and retention.
Aroma is all over the place with biscuit, red licorice, prune juice, and vanilla extract. Curiously, I wonder if there isn’t a pinch of Belgian yeast in there as well.
The flavor is not so complicated. But it is very pleasant. Heavier fruity malts (there’s that Belgian slant again.) A strong and balancing hoppiness. (I am so used to drinking hoppy beers that this beer seems normal to me.) Taste is consistent.
Mouthfeel is medium heavy. Couple with the malt is seems to border on syrupy. The only thing that saves this beer from being a little cloying is a medium carbonation that keeps the beer alive on the tongue.
Overall I think this is a really good beer. The label is funny as hell in a political way. Nice job, Lagunitas.

22 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark chestnut color. The head is a towering four-finger pale brown shade. It features an incredibly thick, soapy texture, along with some beautiful lacing.
S: Citrusy hops befitting a Lagunitas product jump out at me first. Sadly, I kind of wish more of the brown ale qualities jumped out at me. Still, it has a decent nutty tone beneath all the grapefruit - but there’s also an acidic note to the hops that’s somewhat overbearing.
T: The first sensation on the palate is tons of citrusy hops. It comes across as if you’re biting into a grapefruit. Just like I feared in the aroma, there isn’t much ’brown ale’ to be found (maybe a touch of caramel, toffee, and nuts in the middle of the palate), yet there’s just enough to balance out the (excellent) hops without overshadowing them.
M: I love the crisp lightness of this. I really thought this would be sweet and heavy, and instead it goes down superbly. It does become a bit sweeter as it warms up, though - nothing that’s a dealbreaker, though.
O: This drinks more like an IPA with darker malts instead of a brown ale with a bit of hoppiness. The aroma threw me for a loop, but once I accepted it was the former instead of the latter, I really grew to like this one a lot. I have to wonder: does Lagunitas make anything that sucks? Don’t answer that.

WTF is an apt name for thus beer as it has a lot going in. A brown ale by style name, but tastes like a hoppy red with complex malts a hops.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mikey (504) - farmington, Utah, USA - MAY 15, 2013
The Nose is of pine, citrus, and earth. The taste starts with pine & citrus notes up front, being quickly met by a strong malt backbone. The finish is nutty & hoppy, a typical Lagunitas hop finish. It’s listed as an "Imperial Brown Ale" but tastes more like an Imperial Red.

Good hoppy brown ale, smooth caramel and slight roast notes, i guess its a jobless recovery ale for me.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 hopmelt (38) - Painesville TWP, Ohio, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Pours deep amber, thick one finger head thick lacing. Floral hops, doughy malt, bit of tropical fruit on the nose. Doughy malt, slightly bitter floral, tropical hops up front pine, citrus, floral hops, more doughy malt mid mouth, finish is bitter sweet with mostly floral hops. Medium body and carbonation, no alcohol presence, slightly fruity finish. Overall very good beer, very complex, yet balanced, no one aspect stands out, which helps and hurts this beer, very tasty and drinkable though, for $5.99/bomber I’ll be drinking more of this!
