CaptainCougar (7132) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUN 21, 2008
Bottle thanks to nflmvp: Pours a transparent bright copper orange with a spotty-lacing beige head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel and light fruity esters with a hint of lactic tartness. Body starts fairly full and toasty without much peaty character and a drier, toasty bittersweet finish with some tart notes. Needs a little more authenticity and balance.

Thanks for the bottle, iowaherkeye. The body is ruddy brown with a khaki head. The aroma is rich with malt and caramel. There is also some old dusty library books. The taste is caramel with some rich malt and cherries. There is a little bit of sour cherry character that is off putting.

Bottle shared by shigadeyo at Dilly Deli. Poured hazy dark ruby with an average frothy off-white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sugar and cottage cheese aroma. Medium smooth body with a sticky texture. Flavor was sour and not good with an sour finish of moderate duration. I hope this was a single bad bottle.

3/25/2008: Louie’s Reserve Scotch Ale has the same appearance as the regular <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/lake-louie-warpe Louie Warped Speed Scotch Ale - amber brown with a sthin ivoery-colored head that is mostly lasting. The aroma is also similar except that the Louie’s Reserve Scotch Ale seems to have more caramelized maltiness and no sourness or butterscotch. The flavor is also improved as it is maltier with more caramelized sugar, with less hop bitterness, and no sourness. There are traces of chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee (sour/burnt coffee more so than the other characteristics) toward the finish. The alcohol is well-disguised in this beer, but you can tell it is higher and just a bigger beer in general. The body of this beer is medium to medium-full and has an average mouthfeel. Overall this beer is better than the Warped Speed, but not significantly better. This beer is quite disappointing. If it were up to me, I’d drop the Warped Speed from the Lake Louie line-up, label this as the "regular" Scotch Ale and then make a bettter "reserve" Scotch Ale. I really think Lake Louie could do better than this offering!

12 fl. oz. bottle. Rating #29 for this beer...

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle from Bob McFarland Liquors in McFarland, Wisconsin. Pours a reddish brown amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white creamy head that leaves behind a thin film and thin ring. Plus, it has a good thick lacing. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, a touch of soy sauce, and some dark pitted raisin fruit. Taste is medium bodied, very light carbonation with a heavy alcohol texture, roasted caramel malt and a touch of brown sugar. Finish is very warming and slightly metallic from the alcohol, and has a slight tart raisin aftertaste. Could use a little aging. Luckily I picked up three bottles and will age the remaining two for at least two years.

Pours a deep crimson brown with a 1/2 inch ivory head, a bit hazy. Aroma is earthy and sweet, malty, nutty. Flavor is sweet caramel, pistachio, malty and smoky, and a bit astringent. Pleasant but not great. Medium body and light carbonation to style. Finishes dry, and the flavor pleasantly lingers. Overall a good scotch, but I expected more from Lake Louie.

12 oz bottle

Thanks to someone at work for giving to me as part of a going away package. I was about to trade for some of the most recent batch to give it a try. In fact I may still do that just to see how it compares fresh to having two years on it. I found it to be a decent scotch ale but it did not blow me away. Once again Lake Louie has a solid offering that is good but does not stand out.

Aroma / Appearance - A two finger eggshell colored head floated to the top of the glass pressing down on the dark ruby body underneath. Walnuts, black cherries, caramel and raspberry truffles were not a suprise. The hint of black olives though was a bit unusual and put me off.

Flavor / Palate - Cherry pie, black walnuts and peat hit the tongue after the first sip. A lingering semi-dark chocolate finish wraps things up. There is a little sourness perhaps from age but not too bad. This particular one may have been a little over the hill; if you’ve got any left drink it now before it fades even more.
