BeerBelcher (698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 14, 2008 I thought this beer was good, but it was much more like a porter than an Imperial Stout to me: there was plenty of really tasty roastiness, but it wasn’t very intense, thick/viscous, alcohol-tasting, and lacked the hop/bourbon barrel/aged/etc bells and whistles that most imperial stouts seem to have. So while it may be unlike other beers in this hard-to-define "style" (and I use this word loosely in this case), it was good.
It pours black with very little head. Aroma is extremely roasty and fairly dry. Flavor is again very roasty (to the extent of being a bit chalky) and dry and good. Mouthfeel is pretty dry but flavor lingers in your mouth for quite awhile. Quite nice.
I would recommend this beer. I bought a single bottle of it at 3 Cellars in Franklin.
ATLBeerDog (137), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 17, 2008 Pours brownish red – a couple tads darker than root beer from a 12 oz bottle. It looks black in the glass, with a small 1/8-inch light tan head. Smells of coffee, chocolate, and malt. First sip is super light for an Imperial Stout. It is also bitterer and less sweet than typical IMP Stouts. Tastes of malts and tobacco dominate. As it warms, the coffee taste blossoms. I am amazed how so many flavors can coexist so peacefully in such a light bodied beer. riversideAK (1468), Shoreline, Washington, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle from pepsican. Pours a dark brown with a tan head that settles to a tan film. A ton of crap floating around in this. The aroma is of sweet chocolate and roast. Very earthy too. Has flavors of chocolate, roasted and burnt malts. A good deal of hops give this one a definite big earth presence. Somewhat bitter in the finish with a lingering hop/dry roast on the palate. There is no way this is 12%. It can’t be. Maybe. Who knows? Juelze (654), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 28, 2008 Pours out a dark brown with thick light brown fizzy head. Aroma is light tobacco, leather, earth, light chocolate, light coffee and light fruitiness. Taste is oatmeal, light chocolate, light hops, and some coffee. In the finish, a fresh citrus hop bouquet becomes apparent, but you really have to look for it. Finishes a bit watery, but it’s not too bad. The 12%abv is doubtful or just masterfully hidden. Different then most impy stouts and definitely worth a try. scoobysnak (239), Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, USA May 18, 2008 Pours dark with a coca cola type fizzy head. Sediment floating around in there also. Smell is roasted malts, dark fruit and smokey notes also. Taste is heavy smoke and roasted malts. Leaves a strong aftertaste of smoke but also a hint of metal flavor. For me the smoke overpowers everything. But at 12 percent it also covers the booze nicely. Nothing special. Maybe a bad bottle but I’m not at all impressed Lumpy (1530), Carrollton, Texas, USA May 15, 2008 Bottle. Nose-rice, raw malts, cooked wheat, very “raw” nose, straw, hay, sweet grass-very grassy and raw. Body-opaque with a thick ring of bubbles, ultra thin film of bubbles. Taste-oats, light honey, oatmeal, surprisingly high amount of hops, very nice oaty/roasty flavor. Very well done, excellent flavors without being too hoppy and sweet-but is it really an Imperial Stout? Insert chin scratching smiley here.
