3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This 12oz bottle has been sitting in my pantry for a few years now but it’s held up well.
An aggressive pour into a standard pint tumbler produces a solid finger or so of head atop a deep buckeye-brown liquid; impressive for how long it’s been sitting around. That head produces thick lace that clings to the inside of the glass. Aroma is a pleasant blend of piney hops, some citrus notes, and deep roasted grain. Flavor is primarily a blend of pine and roasted grain, two flavors that clash more than complement in my opinion which is why I don’t care for this "black IPA" style very much. Some of the citrus notes eventually poke through as the beer warms, along with some chocolate and a bit of caramel.
Well-done for the style I guess, but maybe I’m not the best judge since I don’t fancy the style to begin with.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cellared 12 oz. bottle, shared & poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue, with very frothy, brownish tan head foam, and waves & spots of lacing. The nose was roasted, aged wood, toffee, with some caramel sweetness. Light to medium bodied, the texture was a bit watery, and the carbonation was basically soft, but did offer some spritz & silk to take the edge off the low, tannic astringency. Finished dry. Maybe I’ll find a fresher supply when I’m up for the GToM.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
An interesting beer. Very dark with an aroma of resiny hops, java, and hint of tart fruit. Taste is roasty and piney the raspberries blend with the hops and give the bitterness and hop flavor an interesting character. It's a little slick on the tongue. A good beer, the fruit might throw it a little off balance.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black. Small creamy beige head, partly lasting with good lace. Aroma is a bit scant; light soft citrus hops, lots of milk chocolate, fairly dessert-like. Flavor has more hop presence, pine, with more milk chocolate. Lighter medium body. Creamy. Moderate pine bitterness. Kinda creamy, a little oily. Balanced. If I didn’t know there was some raspberry I don’t think I would have picked any out. A good beer but probably wouldn’t be compelled to come back to.

A: Opaque Hue, Passes No Light, Off White Head Ring, Some Lacing
S: Chocolate Malts, Mild Coffee, Mild Cherry
T: Chocolate Malts, Mild Coffee
M: Mediocre Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Drying
Overall,, just a mild black ale with a mildly weird chocolate taste, not sure if its from the malts or a chocolate substitute.

12 ounce bottle
Picking up a single of this while in town for the Great Taste of the Midwest I had high hopes. After all Lake Louie does not often disappoint. This one is no exception. Much like many of their beers it is not a game changer. Instead they offer an affordable regional option for people looking for good beers.
Aroma / Appearance - A deep black base results from a gentle pour that reduces the wispy head to mere hints. Malt, dark chocolate, and soft hops soothe the nose.
Flavor / Palate - Coffee and raspberry truffles sweeten the palate almost after the first sip. The creamy texture carries a malty tang into the finish. This then lingers for a while. This isn’t the punchiest black IPA but hits a great combination of flavor and price point.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Rileys World of Wines in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with an average sized tan head that quickly dissipates to a thin beige cream top and some spotty lacing. Aroma of floral and citrusy hops, chocolate malt, a hint of tart berries and light molasses. Taste is full bodied, toasted dark malt, a hint of soy and more raspberry presence in taste than aroma. Finish is thick and oily, aftertastes of both bakers chocolate, raspberries and plenty of Cascade-style hops with lingering bitterness. Quite tasty!
