4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Well, I ain’t even gonna be shy about it, I loved this beer. It has a pretty shitty rating but I loved it. I am still curious as to why ’Red Ale" is not a style and must be classified as an Amber when it clearly stands apart. Firstly, this brew is a pretty redhead, a rusted gold with a long lasting head. A wonderful bouquet of burnt toffee, barnyard, fresh bread and buckwheat honey awaits the nose. It is quite sweet and very malty, exactly how I like my reds unless they claim to be Red IPAs or some such hoppy style. Not too bubbly and smoothness like silk make it a pleasure to drink. I’d raise this pint any day.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: clear red-tinged deep amber with one fat finger of fine ivory head, good retention and patchy lacing. (3/5) Aroma: caramel malt, grassy and earthy hops, wood and light smoke. (6/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (6/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, medium duration mildly bitter and lightly smoky finish. (3/5)
Sorry, but I find it really hard to get excited about yet another middle-of-the road amber, distinguished only by the roasty malt tones coming through as slight smoke. Fair enough, that slight smokiness adds some depth, but it’s hard to call it “complexity” (and I’m not entirely sure it’s deliberate). A reasonably well-executed but ultimately boring beer. (12/20)

Looks fine but tastes heavily roasted and has something that coats the palate, so the mouth feel is not enjoyable

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a nice darker red colour with a thin head and a little lace. Taste is heavy on the malt, biscuity, nutty and sweetness. Not too bad

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
473 ml can from a sampler four-pack from Sobeys, in a pilsner flute. Pours a moderate reddish-amber with light carbonation and a slight mocha-tinged head that leaves rings and islands of lace.
(While checking color and carbonation with a flashlight, I pointed the light from behind the glass, and noticed that this ale is full of fine particulate. It leaves me wondering if my glassware has been clean enough lately, if I ought to be doing this every time to check beer for clarity and floaty bits, and/or if my OCD is making a return, as a new worry about "they’re putting dirt in my beer"...)
Aroma has a surprising amount of dusty flowery and herbal hops above the lightly toasty malt with a sweet citrus fruit spread. Flavor is earthy and peppery, the malt going from sweet to almost a bit savory, with the preserves-like citrus fruit rounding it out. A bit thick, with a clean, dry finish. Good, but could use some refinement.

473ml can from LCBO. Thanks Audrée. Aroma: caramel, nuts, raisin and bread. App: clear dark red with small off white head, little lacing. Taste and palate: light body, medium sweetness, soft carbonation, watery, really subtle bitter finish. Overall: meh. Feels like I’m drinking a Rickard’s Red or some other commercial beer. Will be probably be a dp.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
0.473 can. Clear, brown color and a medium, off-white head of proper retention. Sweet aroma of hops, malts, flowers - relatively nice. Taste is malty, caramel, sweet, with a subtle note of hops and flowers. Light to medium body, slick texture, and soft carbonation. Finish is more caramel than the rest but those ester flavors remain as well. Overall a pleasant and refreshing brew; it doesn’t represent a true craftsmanship but neither is it dull or hackneyed.
