I’m not a huge English Strong Ale guy, but this beer is fantastic. Smells amazing, looks amazing, and the taste is even better.

Pours a near black ruby red with a foamy head. Aroma of plum cherries and alcohol. Taste is dark and malty up front with a smokey bitterness in the finish notes of dark fruit come through. The mouthfeel reveals alcohol and a higher level of carbonation.

Draft at the brewpub. Dark reddish black color. First description: Wow. Full of licorice and brown sugar, with an almost corn syrupy backdrop. But it’s thick like oil almost and definitely strong. (#5821, 10/10/2014)

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Pours a dark brown with red highlights and thin beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, burnt nuts, burnt chocolate, and dark fruits. Has a bit of a metallic taste. Dark fruits and burnt everything. A touch of bitterness. Basement musk. Too light bodied for a strong ale. Was hoping for more everything and less burnt everything.

Its body has a dark brown color with deep crimson highlights. The head on top was about one and half fingers thick, light tan in color and made very nice lacing on the glass. Sweet caramel and brown sugary notes pop out in the nose along with some toasted malt and mild earthy/leafy hops. It has a base of roasted and toasted bready malt flavors. There is plenty of sweetness up front with notes of brown sugar, sweet/buttery bread, diacetyl and dark caramel. The 7%abv adds only a slight touch of character and is mostly well hidden. The middle sees the addition of dried leafy and earth hop flavor along with some bitterness for balance. The finish has a nice blend of sweet malt, a hint of bitter dark chocolate and hops. It has a smooth, slightly slick texture with soft yet active carbonation in a solid medium to full body.
