On tap at the Peekskill Brewery. Pours a dark cola brown to black with a medium beige head. Sweet malt, dark fruit, toast, and caramel on the nose. Sweet, thin to medium bodied, and a touch of roast. Finishes with a light booze note.

Clear brown with a small white head. Nose is earthy, tobacco and horse. Taste is very malty that’s, sweet, woody, maybe a bit nutty and also… well… “hairy”!?! Something about the taste reminded me of wet fur or something of that nature. Decent beer but I like my beer like I like my women, not too hairy.

Bottle. Pours an amber body with a tan head. Sweet caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruits. A light woodiness and hints of wheat and bubble gum. Interesting brew.

Bottle acquired from Pessie and served in a Bells Tulip: Pours a deep garnet and murky brown hue with a big fluffy off-white head and left very good lacework upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of crystal toffee malts, pale chocolate, Golden Promise base malt, some EKG and Northdown hops with a light fruity and leathery ester. A bit dusty and cardboardy but that was expected since it was cellared by Joe. When the beer works those seemingly off-notes actually work within the style...

then the taste, actually drier than expected, not as sweet as I would have thought. Light kiss of English bitterness and prevailing cardboard with some oxidization. The issue here is a complete and utter lack of depth that are found in best of genre. Minimal fruity notes, minimal darker malt tones, and really just a lack of earthy "punch". The mouth feel is equally disappointing, much thinner than is expected. This beer appears over attenuated if you ask me. Dry ashy metallic finish. Worse yet the thinness makes the alcohol more noticeable. This beer started with so much promise but flopped when it mattered more, on the palate. I like a nice British styled strong ale as much as anyone so this really made me sad.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 2 Mar 2010) Dark reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty, slightly nutty nose with notes of chocolate and caramel. Malty, nutty taste with chocolate, dark bread, toasted grain and a gentle, spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, balanced sweetness. Well balanced and nice beer with alcohol well hidden.

Beershine (5173) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - APR 27, 2012
Bottle from Marsonthemoon. Dark brown, really nice and deep. Scattered lacing. The aroma is big on spicy dark malts, alcohol late and mainly as it warms. The flavors are pumpernickel crust. Surprisingly dry for such a malt-heavy beer, and the illusion of nutmeg makes it seem as astringent and tannic as it does. Soft palate and generally well-constructed. A "mild" younger sister for Ubu would be wonderful.

Malty dark ale. Strong alcohol and chocolate notes are completely hidden in it’s complex and easy to drink taste.

HBF 2005. I was surprised by how much I liked this beer. Im usually not into english strong ales, but this one was really good. Deep amber/mahagony with a slight lasting light beige head. Aroma is loaded with sweet caramel malts and balanced by a nice herbal/earthy hop presence. SOme fruity hints as well. Flavor is toffee, crystal malts, and some fruit with a good hop balance. Slightly bitter finish balances some of the sweetness. Very nice.

[2422-20090802] Tap. Berry malt toast aroma. Clear, dark mahogany red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Mild roast malt grains flavour has more fruit in the background. Full body is quite boozy. Average, a little too rough and boozy.

(12oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) clear dark caramel color with very faint bubbles. Nose of brown sugar, sweet caramel and apples. Taste is lightly smoky, rye, sweet cracker with an oily body and bready finish.
