Silphium (2029), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jun 10, 2008 On tap at the brewery. Hazy coppery body, thin tight off-white head. Light bready, sweet body with citrusy and piney hops providing nice balance. Refreshing and quaffable.
CharlesDarwin (1413), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2006 An even tawny mahogany pour with a fringed edging of gold and a white rim of head. Distant hops and malt aroma. A somehwat off toasted oat sugars, with a rough woody grain and oaky presentation. Some buttery Cascade touches in there...maybe some diacetyl? It’s okay. Palate carries some decent balance, which is pleasent. Certainly the most drinkable and nicely sessionable of their beers. UnsofistaCat (212), Garden City, Michigan, USA Aug 14, 2006 I thought this was too hoppy for a ESB, but still pretty good. I had this last week and only gotten to reviewing right now. Terrible rating I know. jerc (3217), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 24, 2004 Bottle. Dark hazy amber with a medium tan head. Gusher. Touch of caramel and hops in the aroma. Fairly typical ESB profile, nice bitterness and a tiny hint of astringcency in the dry finish. Decent palate? Bit of a funky tang lingering in background making only slight appearances. Average but pleasant. Thanks DuctTape. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Jun 26, 2003 Color is a nice golden light amber with a copper tone. Very thin head but has light off-white stringy lace that sticks well. Smell is a nice floral citrusy aroma, very pronounced, a bit crisp and very fresh with a nice caramel backing, quite a decent wiffer. Taste is mellowing smooth of citrusy hops with a very nice little hop twinge that dances on the tongue a bit and goes down smooth with a slight lingering bitterness thats not overpowering in the least. Caramel malt backing that keeps it balanced is a bit noticeable. Solid medium body, pretty full and a nice bittering dryness in the finish. This is pretty good stuff, an American take on the English style ESB thats not to hoppy or piney.
