2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Poured black with little head. Burnt coffee and roasted malt aroma. Not really hoppy. I expected more hopps. Mostly coffee, burnt sugar and bitterness

Not truly a black ipa but it ’s by far one of the best lake superior beer I have had.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle, consumed on 5-20-14. Labeled as "Lake Superior Deep Water Black IPA Ale," a rather oddly redundant designation. Smells like a baked good, with scents of coffee, bran muffin, carob, chocolate brownie, plum, and citrus tartness (lemon, orange). Pours dark brown with a medium brown to dark amber hue and a small amount of short-lasting beige head. The flavor has a pronounced roasty quality and tastes more like a stout than a black IPA. Perhaps this is an older bottle and the hops have faded. I purchased it a few weeks ago, and I know Lake Superior beers don’t exactly fly off the shelves in the Twin Cities (though I consider it an underrated and all too often forgotten brewery in the Minnesota scene). That said, this beer is quite pleasant, and the finish and aftertaste are long and dry in a hoppy way. Flavors of coffee and dark chocolate brownie with hints of malty sweetness, especially in the finish. Lively and easy to drink. Medium body. Overall, Deep Water is a simple but enjoyable beer.

This black IPA was definitely lacking on the hops. It tasted more like a stout than an IPA.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled at Rapids Liquor tasting. Medium roast in the aroma. Taste is a piney hop start, then into roasted malts for the finish. Overall it’s thin and it hinders it from moving up into the realm of other good Black IPAs. Wouldn’t mind a more in-depth review, however, since my rating’s below the consensus.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: APR 18, 2014 Pours a dark, oily brown-black, with small, cream head. Aroma of roasted grain and hops. Flavor is roasted grain, burnt toast, some hop citrus and bitterness. Pretty good, tasty black IPA.**I’ve since had a couple of other bottles that were ridiculously overcarbonated, so as to be almost undrinkable. Have to reconsider my rating (went from 3.6 to 3.3).

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a deep brown with an off white thin but lasting head. Aroma reminds me more of an ipa with malts of a brown ale, lacking the sharpness of black malts. Taste is sweet with a bitter hop finish, again like the aroma this taste is missing the black malt stickiness. Mouthfeel is thin and uninspired, kind of falls flat. This is really close to being great but is just missing something for me to rank high among black ipas.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark brown with a small beige head and some lacing. Aroma is grassy hops and some malt. Flavor is initially quite hoppy with hints of grass, pine, and citrus with roasted malt notes as well. Medium body with medium carbonation and a nice mouthfeel. Pretty good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours cola brown with a nice soapy khaki head that settles to a tight soapy film and some lacing too. Aroma has a good mix of bitter floral fruity hops and roasted chocolate malt. Taste is straight forward with the above of bitter hops and roasty chocolate malt. Palate is thin to medium with a fizzy carbonation and silky feel that finishes dry. Solid BIPA!
