COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Eastside Dark The rich, coffee-like aroma and flavor of this fine Dark Bavarian style lager beer is derived from a precise blending of three different specialty barley malts, chocolate, black patent, and Munich malt. Munich malt is also added to bring about the creamy body of this malty brew that has an original gravity of 1060. The most impressive aspect of this brew is the perfect balance between the specialty malts and coveted Mt. Hood hops. Unlike many other dark beers, East Side Dark doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste associated with it. Instead, your palate is greeted with the rich body and balanced flavor that only this beer can deliver.

Dark amber brown with a cream head. Some traces of lacing. Smells a little sweet, roasted, and like soy sauce. Taste very smooth, with sweet caramel malts. Med carbonation. I don’t taste the hops very clearly, although there are some there. I find this to be a calm, simple beer with not too much going on, but it is pleasant to drink.

Very dark clear amber, light head and lace. Typical regional brewery lager: Watery roasted malt doesn’t grow into anything. Bittering is minimal, caused mostly by carbonation. One-note, and not very full-bodied. One of my friends appropriately named it "beer-coke." Too bad.

Pours a burgundy color, with a nice tan head, soft carbonation, bit of a coffee and chocolate notes, some sweet malts, watery mouth feel.

12oz bottle poured into glass. Perhaps my glass is too cold but I can’t seem to smell anything here. Flavor is a little nutty and malty but very plain here. Avoid this one.

At the brewery tour recently, I asked famous tour guide Bob (who was at the tappers) which was best for starting the tour. He said something like "Geez just go with the Eastside Dark. It’s the best we’re brewing." (Remembering the exact quote is not possible because of the volume of beer consumed on a tour when your date doesn’t drink beer but is quite pleased to give you all four of her free drink coins.) Bob was right on target. Full-bodied and deliciously sweet, Eastside Dark was the best beer sampled that night (once again, as best as I can remember).

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2011 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate and some light noble hops. Flavor is smooth rich dark bread malt and a mild hop bitterness. Medium to light body with normal carbonation and a clean, smooth mouth feel. Really good smooth dark lager.

Bottle. Dark brown with passable head. Very nice roast malt scent. Chocolate and coffee and malt goodness. Flavour is as nice as the aroma. Really nice palate and tasty malt. Tastes like chocolate wafer cookies. A nice zing that buzzes over the palate from middle to finish. Makes me almost rethink my love of hops over malt.

Bottle. Impressive dunkel. Awesome big coffee nose. Very dark brown pour (looks black until you hold it up to light), with a decent off-white head that fades to a ring. Palate is a little thin - a little more body and bittering hops would really make this one ’pop’. Taste is coffee & chocolate - not as intense as the aroma, but very nice. Good stuff.
