3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ernest (5187) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 3, 2002
UPDATED: DEC 14, 2003 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread, roasted nuts), lightly hoppy (herbs, resin). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, lightly acidic. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Mt. Hood aren't exactly appropriate for this style, but they actually end up working ok. Nice malt character, pretty clean. Very quaffable.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 scrawfis (143) - Naperville, Illinois, USA - JUN 1, 2002
Great sweet, malty nose very similar to a doppelbock. First tastes bring out a fairly intense chocolate flavor with coffee flavors coming out in the finish. This beer is extremely smooth and refreshing. Would definitely get this one again!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 VENOM (941) - Connecticut, USA - MAY 16, 2002
Slightly hazy dark copper, a little light for a Dark lager. Foamy tan head, fat initially then it settles down. Light but steady carbonation. Faint aroma of light roasted malts, metallic notes, wisps of coffee and spicy hops. Medium body. Healthy black malt harshness and a light coffee bitterness. Lingering aftertaste of light roasted caramel sweetness. Spicy hop balance. Finishes slightly drier, with a noticeable burnt malt flavor. Don’t let the color fool you, this is a very good Dark lager.
2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 duece (103) - Waterford, Wisconsin, USA - APR 16, 2002
Rich nutty aroma with a very strong malty flavor. Not unpleasent but I prefer a better balance in a dark beer.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DavidP (1745) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 7, 2002
UPDATED: DEC 7, 2003 Has a bitter yet smooth taste. Unfortunately, it doesn't really distinguish itself from other dark lagers, such as Beck's Dark.

Slightly bitter chocolate aftertaste. Very malty. Lakefront does it again!

A sweet, malty Milwaukee classic. Refreshing and smooth, but a bit watery for a dark beer.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - DEC 13, 2001
Sort of like a lighter, lager version of a top-flight oatmeal stout or sweet porter, if that gives you an idea... 12/13 rerating: somewhat of a disappointment--not as distinctive as I remembered it from a year ago, rather thin on both the nose and the tongue, though with a great dry finish. Flavors are mostly bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and a hint of cherry. Doesn’t seem like the masterpiece I once thought it, but still a fine dark from one of the best American breweries.

Looks good, and tastes good. Some nice subtle chocolate, but not too much, another great beer from the best unknown brewery out there.
