First tastes bring out a fairly intense chocolate flavor with coffee flavors coming out in the finish. This beer is extremely smooth and refreshing. Would definitely get this one again! Nice deep rose / mahogany in color and only a brief presence with the head. Aroma is chocolate, cedar panels, caramel, toffee and copper kettle. Flavor evolves, rounding out a nice, sweet caramel and chocolate malt complexion. Hints of peat and smoked malts enter at the tail end to add a slight earthiness persona, but then somewhat diffuse to a chocolatey toffee sweetness. One of Lakefront’s bests. The aroma here, to me, isn’t so much coffee as it is smoky, rich dark nutmeats, souring, getting moldy, along with a hefty bark element. Rich, very slight sweetness lingering in the aroma. The flavor contains swirling brown sugar and iron-y moassess, raisin, and great gobs of thinnish caramel and roasted malt. Noble hops close the deal by thinning the ending palate (they impart some peppery spice, a bit of pencil shavings). Only drawback, and this may be on account of this being an old bottle, is it’s slightly more sour than it should be. The appearance here is gorgeous, the fluff on the bone white head was so large, and fades in moderate time to a small ring. Cletus (5061), Connecticut, USA

Small head, moderate carbonation. Flavor slightly tangy, one of the better dunkels I’ve had. brewblackhole (1386), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA

This beer even won first place at the show. I wonder if they ever collected their cash prize since the show. Just like it was in 1990, it pours like a quality oatmeal stout, dark as it gets and holds a tan head well. Aroma of semi-sweet chocolate, coffee and cherry. Finishes clean and chocolatey. It’s terrific to know the product is as consistent as it was 17 years ago. Has it been that long? prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

This is quite well-balanced, as there is no aftertaste, and a smooth coffee and chocolate taste. Drink one at the brewery or at Wolski’s and close the place down!
