3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jebert (317) - Watertown, Wisconsin, USA - APR 29, 2011
Pours ebony black with a thick creamy two finger head mostly lasting. Aroma is malt, coffee and liquorice. Fairly creamy on the palate, the taste is of dark roasted malt, coffee and just a bit of hops for a hint of dryness at the finish. Not overly flavorful for all its dramatic color, but nonetheless a very robust stout that pairs well with a brat slathered with oninons and mustard.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 JCB (3117) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - APR 18, 2011
12oz bottle from State Line. Coffee beer completist that I try to be, I grabbed this one off the shelf. Is the glaring spelling error in the commercial description an omen of failure? Emphatic yes. Flat cola pour, with a few bubbles showing up like they’re punching the clock. Very grainy base stout in the nose with faint tart notes and depressingly modest coffee too. Thin-ass body. Not much of a sweet stout, this beer, with no hops anymore, a dose of lacto perhaps, and precious few roasts. This is the beer for those sad bastards who think Dunkin Donuts has good coffee.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 PlainsDrifter (64) - Adelphi, Maryland, USA - APR 18, 2011
Pours dark brown with a very small tan head. Very little carbonation. Sweet, coffee flavor a little sour, burnt aftertaste. Drinkable, not bad, but not great.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mbgrayson (375) - Anaconda, Montana, USA - APR 16, 2011
Pours almost black, with thin tan head. Aroma is thin and malty. Taste is sweet and heavily of coffee and malt. Smooth and drinkable. Thumbs up, but barely so.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 DSG (3017) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - APR 4, 2011
Bottle. Beer of the month club. Black-colored with a big bubbly beige head. Aroma of coffee beans, a bit vegetal, roasted grains, nutty notes and light fruity hints. Sweetish-sourish flavor, with roasted malt, lactic notes, fruits and some coffee. Finishes drier. Light to medium-bodied. I think this one’s a bit off - sourish and a bit unpleasant, but not all bad.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 wlajwl (1812) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - APR 1, 2011
Not as much coffee in the aroma and flavor as I was expecting. It’s a rather basic stout that has a little bit of coffee flavor to it compared to other more straightforward stouts, but not enough to make it unique or great.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mrjaxson (119) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 19, 2011
Hard to coax much of a head out of the bottle. The coffee aroma dominates the nose. The taste is heavy on bitterness and the body is medium, which comes as a surprise for such a jet-black pour. The finish is pleasant enough, dominated by a coffee flavor that is more gentle at the end. An average coffee stout.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 maley1 (280) - calgary, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 19, 2011
Black pour with small tan head that quickly fades. Smell of coffee, roasted malts and black nibs. Taste gives way to the coffee. Not bad.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BigBeer45 (975) - Michigan, USA - MAR 18, 2011
Bottle from a eight pack,
this stout has a dark opaque pour and gave a tan colored half finger head that collapses rather fast, the beer is dark enough that I cannot see through it but I do see some bubbles flowing up the edges of the glass, there were a few spots of lacing on the glass as I drank, and I found a very thin layer of sediment on the bottom of the bottle,
the aromas were coffee and roasted malt with a little sweetness, and caramel,
the flavors consisted of coffee, roasted malt and some malt sweetness, there was a little bitterness at the finish,
medium mouth feel,
this is an ok stout, nothing really stands out in this brew but this is a typical coffee stout beer.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DalzAle (1466) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - MAR 8, 2011
Bottle thanks to portableparty. Dark black pour, lasting solid head and a burnt coffee and green pepper aroma. Flavor is about the same as the aroma, peppers, lactose, burnt coffee and finishes very bitter. Not a bad coffee beer, but there are certainly many that are better.
