3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 manuchampions (1154) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 16, 2010
12oz bottle from Libations in Dundarave. Pours jet black with a hint of ruby highlights at the edges of the glass and a small but lasting tan head that leaves some lacing. Surprisingly big aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Taste is the same as aroma but with less assertiveness. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness. Roasty finish. Very good considering the relatively low alcohol.

Bottle. Close to black with beige head. Aromas of coffee, caramel, wood smoke. Flavors of coffee, tobacco, caramel. Sweet finish. Medium-thin body with watery mouthfeel and low, bright carbonation.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Finhead (654) - OFallon, Illinois, USA - DEC 12, 2010
A deep black pour with a small brown head. The aroma is mostly coffee along with some dark chocolate. The texture is pretty thin with average carbonation. Initially the taste is mildly sweet, but it has a long coffee finish.
2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 bhiner41 (95) - La Grange, Illinois, USA - DEC 7, 2010
Poers jet black, little to no head. Smells just like coffee, tastes like coffee. Very little burn or big flavor. A suprisingly mild stout for such dark color and strong coffee smell.
1.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20 ROGUE (1315) - Newark, Delaware, USA - DEC 1, 2010
12oz bottle. (guessing this was a bad bottle) Poured with carbonation overload (could only get quarter of bottle in pint glass and it took 15 minutes to settle out) a deep coffee black with a dark tan head. Nice strong coffee aroma. All flavor was killed by the stinging over carbonation. Will re-review with hopefully a better sample.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 FreshHawk (596) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - NOV 21, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 18, 2010 Bottle.
A - Deep, dark black with a smaller than average sized, creamy, frothy, light cafe colored head. Disappears fast leaving behind essentially no lace.
S - Coffee dominates the nose. Roasted black coffee and a roasted malt aroma. Second smell reveals a fairly strong smokey aroma as well. Also a very background tart anise kind of aroma.
T - A bit less coffee than the aroma suggested. Strong black coffee, but not strong espresso. Just as the aroma suggested, I am picking up a showing of smoked malt. Faint smoked meat flavors. A touch of earthiness toward the finish. Fairly bitter but has a slight creamy taste.
M - Lighter body but a good level of carbonation. Has a slick/oily feel.
D - Not especially drinkable because the mixture of strong black coffee, smoked malt and meat, and faint tart anise didn’t quite mix right for me. Fairly bitter, roasted taste. 1 was enough for me.
Notes: A slightly odd beer. Coffee was obviously a very strong component of this beer. The smoked malt/meat flavor and aroma really threw me for a loop and caught me off guard. Not a bad beer, but I probably won’t get it again.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 fiver29 (1014) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - NOV 13, 2010
Bottle pours black with tan head. Aroma is pretty underwhelming. It has some coffee and slight roast notes. But not much. Light mouthfeel. Flavor was pretty much on par with the bottle. Just underwhelming. Coffee light with a touch of malt is about right.
