Slight alcohol smells are hidden behind a rich roasted smell with coffee and malt notes. Body is thin to medium. Flavors are subdued, as is the finish which is faintly smoky. I am not getting a whole lot of stout, more coffee mostly. SuzyGreenberg (1411), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jan 30, 2008 After reading this: http://ratebeer.com/forums/dear-stouts:-a-john-dea remembered that I had a stout in my fridge that I had not rated. I poured it into a classic Guinness glass and recoiled in horror as I discovered that it was clear and dark brown. Not black at all, just a shade darker than Newcastle. Some coffee in the aroma and some lame sourness. The flavor is acidic with some coffee notes but not a lot. Very thin and fizzy. This is sort of butt. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Dec 3, 2003 Updated: Jan 11, 2004Dark black stout with a creamy brown head. The thick roast coffee aroma is awesome. Overall flavor was good, but maybe a little too rich/powerful. It was both sweet and bitter... almost like there was too much of both. The beer seemed a little thick going down, but has a good aftertaste. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 9, 2004 very deep brown, reddish color, zero head. aroma is part roastiness, part chocolate. flavor lacks most of the chocolate and is pretty much roastiness with a fair amount of hop bitterness. there is a metallic taste and chalky feel. it's just ok.
