Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPA’s and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

The aroma, honestly, suggests cat whizz and pencil shavings in a coffee pot. There is dark roast and west coast hops in there too. Bad label. Opaque beer, with a large whitish head. The beer pours with a ’glopping’ that suggest a higher viscosity than the beer actually has. Choco-coffee and tangy on the frontend, unpleasant notes of cabbage, sawdust and weird fruit on the backend. Medium body. Roast finish, with a long coffee aftertaste. This wasn’t my fave. World Market, Tallahassee.

Pours dark with a good two fingers of head and nice lacing. Aroma is hoppy with a hint of the roasted malts. I really enjoy the flavor and mouthfeel of this beer. Pretty much what you would expect, hoppy like an IPA but with the nutty roasted malt finish. With the price and the drinkability I’ll definitely enjoy this one again sometime.

UPDATED: NOV 28, 2011 Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 11/27/11

Aroma: The nose has notes of roasted malts, toast, pine, and a little bit of resin
Appearance: It pours a black-brown color with a thick brown head and lots of lace
Flavor: The taste is roasted malty sweetness up-front, with a piney hop bitterness later on
Palate: It is medium bodied, but a touch watery, and it feels fairly smooth, with soft-to-average carbonation
Overall Impression: This was a solid Black IPA. I thought it was reasonably balanced between the roasted malts and the piney hops. To me, this one works pretty well.

Savannah, Ga - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 22 oz bomber. Dark copper fading to black pour with a sticky off-white had that leaves plenty of lacing. Nice spruce aroma with some light licorice hints. Flavor has some light citrus notes, some brief licorice accents, some root beer sweetness, a bit of spicy mintiness. Mouthfeel is thick and rich, Overall, solid.

Draft at Haze. Brown-black, thin beige head. Medium to full-bodied, some dry chocolate tones. Some soapy hop tones, rather one-dimensional and minimal for the style. Decent for a Lakefront. OK.

On tap @ Lakefront. Dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is full of fresh hops, citrus and floral, light coffee and burnt malt. Fairly bitter hop and roast with some medium malt sweetness. Medium body with average carbonation. Nice black IPA, not overly roasty or coffee and really fresh and hoppy.

Pours a dark, nearly opaque, cola color with a robust light tan head. Aroma is pine cones and dark malt. Smooth bitter dark chocolate flavor with notes of grapefruit and freshly ground coffee. In spite of the cascade hop presence, i think the bitterness is primarily from the dark roasted malts. A fine effort!

Bottle @ home. Black appearance with a big, carbonated, brown head. Piney, bushy hoppy, lightly bitter, roasty dark malty aroma. Mild roasty, slightly burnt malty, piney, a little bitter, mild grapefruit, hoppy flavor with more resin and piney finish. Overall a pretty solid Black IPA.

Pours a deep black with a pleasant aroma of lightly roasted grapefruit and slightly charred orange rind. Flavor is grapefruit coffe with a finish of piny nuts. Slippery and oily on the palate. Tasty brew.

650ml bomber. It pours a dark brown with a fluffy off-white/tan head that leaves a lot of lacing. Smell is hoppy and chocoaltey. The hops are real good. The flavor is a bit lacking. It wants to be hoppy and roasty and malty at the same time but it is an off-balance. The mouthfeel is a bit thin.
