2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Jet black almost. Very smooth. Hops fade quickly and bitterness sometimes seems to come as much from the black patent malt as from the hops. Not bad at all but it just didn’t gel well. Serving: Bottle

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours brown-black with big, pillowy tan head. Smells pretty delicious; some citrusy hops with a bit of chocolate and tobacco. Flavors fall a bit short - good malt bill with orange citrus, not quite fitting together. Very thin and a bit flat on the palate. Just didn’t quite all come together.

This was a pretty tasty beer paired with some homemade pizza. This is not my favorite beer style by a long shot but I appreciated this one. It had a dark black appearance (much like Coca-Cola) and the bitterness wasn’t as extreme as I was expecting.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours about the color of cola. Huge tan head that lasts with tons of lacing. Decent hop aroma. Seems to be a little overly carbonated. Some chocolate and bitterness. It tastes a bit more like a Schwarzbier than an IPA. Decent but not my favorite black IPA.

Pretty sessionable moderately bitter black ipa, nice hop aroma along with chocolate both in taste, fairly smooth with a clean finish.Big creamy light tan head. Very faint metallic hint, that i pick up often with Lakefront, flat middle also.Good hop flavor with smooth chocolate.Pretty clean mellow finish with a barely noticable long lasting hoppy finish as suggested, along with a short lived hop aroma that fades in and out at times.Doesnt seem like 6.5% and seems kinda light bodied.I wouldnt hesitate to get another, but not so soon.

Moderate citrus and pine hop aroma with a hint of medicine. Black color with a large brown head. Light sweet beginning that quickly turns sweet. Light palate.

2.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Aroma? What aroma? No overall smell I could pick up from this beer. Great frothy head and pours black as would be expected from an IBA. Starts off easy on the palate but ends with a metallic and rusty after taste. If this beer was cheaper I would give it a better score. However, for $5 for a 22oz bomber, I’m not impressed. I have had some of the other Lakefront premium beers which I would rave about but this one is missing something. No body and not much character. I would compare this to a New Belgium 1554 although I would much rather have a 1554. Averaging at roughly $1.47/bottle for New Belgium 1554 and this at $2.73/bottle (12oz) I would say go with the 1554! This beer is definitely over priced!!

Pour is a black with a large tan head. Aroma is a nice pine hop followed by a equally nice rosted malt. Flavor is almost all roasted malt then a few hoppy notes come out the play after the swallow. Leaves a nice bakers chocolate on the tounge. Decent enough.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Poured an opaque dark brown color. The head was thick, creamy, and light brown. Smelled of dark chocolate and fresh green hops. A whiff of leather emerged after some time in the glass. Medium bodied and delicately sweet with mild to moderate bitterness. Chocolate, caramel, pine, and citrus flavors accented by light roasty bitterness. Nice.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Lakefront 88 Sampler Pack - $19.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body, ruby-hinted at the edges when held to the light and capped with a tall, frothy, beige head.
Smell: Florals and a cutting pine note arrive ahead of the roasted malts smelling of chocolate bars and coffee.
Taste: Small snippet of sweetness for the tastes of coffee and chocolate, though the initial malt flavors aren’t particularly bold here, like watery coffee and stale, forgotten cocoa. Low chalkiness. Pine needles and fresh, sliced oranges with a robust bitterness. Some modest grapefruit juice additions. Low acidic qualities. Modestly malt, faintly bitter, but thinning out on the finish (thinnish?).
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-light carbonation. Feels somewhat hollow passing over the tongue.
Overall: For me, it seemed a bit muted, a bit muffled, and just held back from its potential, in terms of malts, the hop flavor, and even the body.
